Johnathan Porter, better known as rapper Blueface, found success through online virality. After the birth of his son in 2017, he entered the music industry through SoundCloud, dropping multiple projects on the platform before finding mainstream success. Two Coccy dropped in early 2018 as an online release, and included tracks like “Movie Scenes” and “Next Big Thing.” Soon after it’s release, Blueface attracted a small fan base local to California that urged him to continue his career. Soon after, Blueface debuted the video for his track “Respect My Crypn” through WorldstarHipHop. The 21-year-old rapper became an instant meme because of his unique offbeat flow. Following the release, the rapper signed to Cash Money West under the label’s founders, Birdman and Wack 100. Then, in December 2018, Blueface dropped Famous Cryp, which lead to immediate success. “Thotiana,” the album’s lead single, debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at No. 75 and quickly climbed to its peak position: #4 on the chart.
There have been countless “Thotiana” remixes: Everyone from YG to Cardi B to Nicki Minaj hopped on the song, and it seems as though no one can rid themselves of the infectious tune. Blueface also cannot rid himself of controversy. On February 1, 2019, he was arrested and later released on a $35,000 bail for being in possession of a loaded and unregistered handgun. Although it is unclear where the legal proceedings will go once he is tried, Blueface is facing up to three years behind bars. Just days after his arrest, the rapper made more headlines when he shared transphobic comments on Instagram after a trans woman slid into his DMs. The next phases of Blueface’s career will be pivotal, as he looks to capitalize on his viral buzz.
