Fellas, Buzzfeed's latest video will have you cringing and holding onto your you-know-whats in sheer terror. The news and entertainment, list-loving website recently put together a video that examines some of the most fascinating yet terrifying manhood rituals practiced around the world. Turns out, becoming a man can be very very painful for men of certain cultures.
While rites of passages like bar mitzvahs and circumcision may be common knowledge, the video also reports on some lesser known traditions that sound physically and emotionally scarring. Young boys of the Algonquin tribe in Quebec are sent into the middle of nowhere, oftentimes caged, and fed a hallucinogen 100 times more powerful than LSD. These drug trips are done so the boys can forget all of their childhood memories and truly "become a man." In some aboriginal regions of Australia, entering manhood means having your joystick sliced down to the scrotum and placed over an open fire. Ouch.
