Mark McNairy Apologizes for the Gap "Manifest Destiny" T-Shirt

The collaboration between GQ and Gap to celebrate the "Best New Menswear Designers" is a success, but one item in particular is causing a media uproar. Mark McNairy's "Manifest Destiny" T-shirt is being petitioned against on Change.org for its historical reference that's associated with American western expansion, and also the genocide of indigenous peoples on the continent.
According to the Change.org petition, the T-shirt "promotes a belief that has resulted in the mass genocide of indigenous people, and it serves to normalize oppression." Gap has since pulled the T-shirt from its online shop. McNairy feels the shirt was misconstrued, and tweeted this apology to his followers today:
