Fresh from its monochrome Kickers collaboration, London-based retailer Goodhood is delivering another collaborative endeavor. This time, the boutique is joining forces with Childhood Calm & Punk to produce a capsule that uses the traditional technique of aizome.
“The technique was used during the Muromachi period (A.D. 1500) and is the most ecological way of indigo dyeing, since all ingredients are biodegradable: Sukumo, indigo dyeing leaves, and Lye, derived from wood ash,” explains Goodhood. “In the final step, the colour fastening, the dyed fabric, is solely oxidised in water and air and fastened through the energy of the sun. Through this ancient process, the aizome method transforms and enhances the properties of the dyed garments, naturally increasing the durability of the fabric, adding antibacterial and odorless attributes.”
Enlisting a thrilling and intriguing mix of international artists—Alexandre Bavard aka. Mosa, Aki Yamamoto, Laurie Herman, and Nick Atkins—from New York, Japan, Paris and Yorkshire, the capsule itself features a hoodie, long sleeve and short sleeve T-shirts, trousers, a mask, a riso-printed zine, and four riso-printed limited editions which have been reinterpreted with the artists’ signature styles.
On the hoodie, you’ll find a print of dogs as well as a poem about loyalty designed by Nick Atkins, while T-shirts feature abstract depictions of sea life. As for the trousers and face mask, Goodhood has chosen to utilise the power of indigo dying.
