Virgil Abloh's "Figures of Speech" exhibit, which is currently open to the public at the Museum Of Contemporary Art Chicago, has, so far, nearly doubled the museum's summer attendance figures.
According to MCA Chicago, the exhibit has welcomed over 100,000 visitors since its opening earlier this year. This is almost double the average attendance numbers that the establishment typically experiences.
"We are excited to see that the exhibition has nearly doubled our average attendance during the summer months, when there are already an increased number of visitors to the city and students are on break," says MCA Chicago's Chief Curator Michael Darling. "With Virgil’s significant youth following, we have seen a surge of young people exploring the museum."
According to Darling the show will be one of its most popular exhibits—the museum has been open since 1967. It's numbers so far place it in the top three of its attendance-breaking shows, which also includes exhibits from David Bowie and Takashi Murakami.
"David Bowie Is," which ran from from September 2014 to January 2015, set MCA Chicago's then-attendance record by welcoming over 193,000 guests during its 15-week stay. This was later broken by Murakami's "The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg" gallery that debuted in June 2017 and concluded in September 2017.
The "Figures of Speech" exhibit originally opened on June 10 and was supposed to conclude on Sept. 22 before MCA Chicago announced that it would extend it for an additional week through Sept. 29. Of course, the accompanying "Church and State" pop-up shop selling exclusive items has also given fans a lot to buzz about during the exhibit's run.
