Women in the fashion industry have a bad rap from the media, whether it's films and books like The Devil Wears Prada or horror stories from former interns and models. This has given folks outside the industry have a skewed version of the people that work in it—especially guys. It's not all Victoria's Secret Angels and steely-souled editors. Yes, they are extremely beautiful, intelligent, and accomplished, which can be intimidating to mere mortals—or dudes with a lack of self-confidence.
But like any human being, there are ways to approach and start a conversation with these women that won't make you look like a creep or an idiot. From struggling interns to PR flacks, we've turned on the sarcasm button while debunking some of the myths surrounding these hard working ladies of fashion. Indulge in our not-so-serious Field Guide to Dating Girls in the Fashion Industry.

The Shop Girl
Pros: Employee discount; Knows your size in everything
Cons: Works weekends; You're banned from her store after the breakup
Where to meet her: On the sales floor
She knows everything about the clothes you need you want to buy, so by default she'll keep you looking fresh, but her early hours and lack of free time will put a damper on building anything, unless you start working at the same store.
The Chill Designer
Pros: Works whenever, Knows how to mend and make clothes
Cons: Fashion Week is like PMS x 10,000
Where to meet her: Williamsburg, probably smoking weed in her studio
A rare find, but if you come across her, do everything in your power to keep her. She's super creative and driven, and focused on her work, but will motivate you to eat healthy, exercise, and do better, or else she'll find someone else who will, likely her weed dealer.
The Intern
Pros: Grateful for everything
Cons: Can't afford shit
Where to meet her: Jogging by the cardboard box that she sleeps in; Yoga class that her parents pay for
Working her way up to a legit job is no easy task so for now, she'll be running errands and grabbing lunch for everyone. She'll always be tense, but she'll never complain when you ask her to pick-up your laundry, and boy can she make a good cup of coffee.
The Driven Fashion Editor
Pros: Highly motivated; Superior taste level
Cons: Too busy to actually pay any attention to you
Where to meet her: Press events with an open bar
Chained to her desk at some cool magazine, she's really grateful to have any personal time, and when she does, she either wants to rage at a bar, or stay in and watch movies. Do thoughtful things like send her lunch (it will also keep her alive because she never has a chance to eat) and you'll be a match made in heaven.
The Struggle Model
Pros: Down to earth; Super personable
Cons: Can't stop taking selfies in her underwear; Has online stalkers.
Where to meet her: Ukraine; Bushwick
You might see the Struggle Model getting paid to sit around and sip vodka waters at some corporate fashion brand's event, or see her online posing seductively with a snapback and graphic tee for a streetwear brand you've never heard of. Yes, she is super attractive, and has the thirsty Instagram followers to show for it. The only downside is that while she's waiting to be "discovered" or make the right industry connections, she's relegated to eye candy for someone's dumb T-shirt/hat line that will inevitably live on through Tumblr reblogs.
The Actual Model
Pros: Is hot, like so hot she gets paid for it; Goes to the gym as much as you
Cons: Will probably leave you for someone rich, famous, or both
Where to meet her: Paris, Alexander Wang's afterparties
Unless you are an athlete, actor, chef, or rapper, you might not ever have a chance to date the Actual Model, but you can dream, right? The odds are in your favor if she gets well-paying gigs for awesome brands but still remains relatively under the radar. But if Victoria's Secret comes calling, the future Angel is officially out of your league.
The Down-Ass Streetwear Chick
Pros: Knows James Jebbia; Ill sneaker collection
Cons: Steals your coolest T-shirts; Ex-boyfriends are rappers, pro skaters, and artists more sucessful than you
Where to meet her: Underground parties, ironically on a rooftop
Streetwear chicks are dope. They are down to earth, unfussy, and almost always go with the flow. The only issue is that slowly but surely you'll notice that your closet will be missing a ton of clothes that she has now claimed as her own.
The Jaded Industry Cougar
Pros: Really successful, Baller-ass pad
Cons: Likely to grow tired of you; Will break your penis with voracious sexual appetite
Where to meet her: Hotel bar; Interning for her
Seasoned is an understatement when you are speaking about the J.I.C., she's marinated. She's helped countless businesses make millions, and didn't have time to pay attention to dating, and now that she's got some free time, she wants to buy some toys, more like boy toys.
The "Fruit Fly"
Pros: Don't have to worry about her cheating
Cons: A "threesome with her friend" means bringing another dude into the mix
Where to meet her: Grindr; Pride Week
Don't take it personal that she refers to you as "girl." She calls everyone girl, even her dad. The "Fruit Fly" is notorious for her all-male clique, and the gaggle of guys she surrounds herself with are attracted to one thing, and that's her shoes. Even though "Girls' Night Out" means she'll be the only girl in the group, you can rest assured that whatever they club they end up at is full of dudes who probably aren't interested.
The Social Media Addict
Pros: Guaranteed to up your followers on Twitter/Instagram
Cons: You're second to her relationship with the Internet
Where to meet her: Twitter, duh
Whether she runs social media for an agency or a brand, the Social Media Addict only cares about the "M" word: metrics. She might even not take you up on your dinner invitation if you have less than 1,000 Twitter followers. She probably has beautiful eyes, but they're usually glued to her smartphone. The only ways you know you're still dating are if she still instalikes all your Instagram photos and the occasional @ mention to her "boyf" on Twitter.
The PR Flack
Pros: Really organized; Always puts you on the list for afterparties
Cons: Embargos "assets" until a certain date; Wears headset during sex
Where to meet her: Standing outside of the event she is producing
Since strategy is something she's a pro at, you might not even know you are dating the PR Flack, but it doesn't matter to her. Hopefully she reps a brand that has a menswear component so that you can get some cool clothes out of it.
The Stylist's Assistant
Pros: Strong Michelle Obama-like arms from carrying samples
Cons: Has about two free hours a week
Where to meet her: At Starbucks, when she's placing a large order for the entire crew
Be advised, she'll be on edge from being on-call 24-hours a day. She does all of the work with little credit for her over-paid boss, and the little time she does have for you will be spent venting about the shoot she has tomorrow with a celebrity you don't care about.
The Personal Style Blogger
Pros: Great style; Gets invited to awesome press trips (plus one!)
Cons: You are automatically her photographer
Where to meet her: Tinder; Instagram; Her blog's comments section
The Personal Style Blogger is probably an Internet celebrity. Hundreds of thousands of people flock to her site on the daily, and she might get recognized on the street by sheepish fans. She's the female equivalent of the #Menswear Blogger, but almost always never dates that type, ironically. That means you actually have a chance, provided you work in finance (blogging ain't that lucrative) and have enough vacation days to travel with her on press trips... because she needs someone to take photos of every single outfit.
The "It" Girl That Everyone Hates
Pros: Hangs out with celebrities; Has apartments in different international cities
Cons: You may end up on a gossip blog or Page Six
Where to meet her: The Brooklyn Flea, probably buying vintage furniture; On a plane to a major city
Stop the hate people. The "It Girl" is the grown-up, fashion industry equivalent of Regina George in Mean Girls. Everyone secretly can't stand her, but otherwise acknowledges her bawse status. If you date her, she might show you the "real" her (word to Drake), but you also risk becoming gossip fodder. But if you really want to be with her, dn't let the haters get to you (word to Kanye), and ride along on her wave of popularity. Besides, the party for her inevitable collaboration with a store like Opening Ceremony is going to be one for the record books.
The VIP Partier
Pros: Always drinks for free
Cons: Doesn't start her day until noon
Where to meet her: Invite-only soirees at swanky hotels; Clubs with cryptic, monosyllabic names
She's used to being most important person at all of the exclusive events and parties around the city. So in order to catch her eye and keep her attention, you need to balance out all of the cool things in her life by adding a sense of normalcy. She misses the days of being a normal civilian. Make her breakfast. She's probably forgotten what it is.
