For every flourish, there is a failure. This is the way the universe maintans balance, and style is no exception. A lot of the usual suspects and up and coming swag lords stunted hard this year, consistently killling it on red carpets and in their day-to-day lives. But, on the flip side, a grip of fuck-ups stood out on red carpets, at award/fashion shows, or just on the street, for all the wrong reasons. These are the celebrities who may want to consult a stylist for the rest of 2014. Read on for The Biggest Style Fails of the Year (So Far).
James Harden's rodeo no-no
Where: Houston Rockets Game, Houston, Texas
When: March 7, 2014
Was Harden offering a visual commentary on how out-of-bounds NBA player style has become by trolling us with every 3 year-old boy's go-to Halloween costume? Probably not. It's more likely that he thought it'd be a nice wink-wink to appropriate a little Texas trill into his wardrobe given his employment with the Rockets. Whatever the inside joke was doesn't matter though, because at the end of the day he went out in public in a ten gallon hat and cowboy boots, with cameras rolling to properly document the five-star badge failure. There's a reason why the Lone Ranger was alone, Jimmy.
Justin Bieber fails to realize sag does not equal swag
Where: Coachella Festival, Indio, Calif.
When: April 13, 2014
Apparently there's nothing constructive about calling Biebs out for his over-the-top fashion choices—all-over spiked fitteds, one-sleeve leathers—because his alternative is a journey into the cozy boy abyss. Forget overdressing, dude flipped the script and looks like he walked down the driveway to get the paper and didn't stop until he got to Coachella. The wisest decision the crooner made was to stop the bandana count at a mere two.
Usher is the anti-Pharrell
Where:BET Awards, Los Angeles, Calif
When: June 29, 2014
We get it. You saw Pharrell shining and reaching new audiences in the Vivienne Westwood joint and figured that it must be the hat. Totally not the pan-genre chart-topping song or anything. Welp, Trapper Raymond, if you want to recapture relevance, let your music do the talking, not a style choice that remained in the 19th century for a reason.
Steven Tyler is a frumpy mystic from another planet
Where: Stella McCartney Garden Party, New York
When: June 6, 2014
Attending Fashion Week is probably a stressful endeavor on the low, since all eyes are on everyone's attire down to the most minute details and accessories. And Steven Tyler, well, failed miserably. Dude looks like a walking scented candle or like he leads a pro-orgies cult on the side. Or maybe he was just trying to draw attention to promote Liv's new HBO series like a cool dad should?
Joey Fatone does the Derby
Where: 2014 Kentucky Derby, Louisville, Ky
When: April 30, 2014
"No such thing as bad press!" Joey Fatone happily exclaimed as he watched his Mom knit her picnic tablecloth into a carpet-ready alphet. SMH. Justin, toss these guys a reunion tour look already.
There's Something About Gisele
Where: Pre-Met gala party, New York
When: May 3, 2014
The bottled peroxide hair with There's Something About Mary gel was the main attraction, sure, but really this whole primary-color driven alphet was one big facepalm. Fire red pants with a blue button-down—really b? Is this what Tom's really like when his supermodel wife lets him dress himself for once? Clearly, he'll never be awarded that freedom again.
Tyga goes Euro-goth at KimYe's Wedding Weekend
Where: Kimye Wedding, Florence, Italy
When: May
Very nice of Tyga to make the trip to Kanye and Kim's wedding all the way from the Matrix.
Busta Rhymes serves Twitter up with instant-slander at the BET Awards
Where: BET Awards, Los Angeles, Calif.
When: June 29, 2014
"Busta Rhymes looks like the official FIFA ball." "Busta Rhymes looks like a Cheescake Factory bag." The tw-ether that rolled down our timelines after the cameras cut to Busta in his Fruit Stripes jacket was definitely more entertaining than the BET Awards themselves.
Willie Cauley-Stein lost the NCAA Tournament
Where: Kentucky Wildcats vs. UConn Huskies
When: April 7
All eyes were on the game, until the cameras caught Cauley-Stein posted on the sidelines, benched thanks to an ankle injury. He found a way to contribute to the game still, with a master plan to distract the Huskies with the loudest, most WTF shirt tucked-under his jersey. With taste like that, this guy's ready for the big leagues and post-game alphets.
LeBron swaggerjacks Pharrell
Where: Miami Heat Locker Room
When: April 4, 2014
Pharrell saw an accessory uniform. LeBron saw the best hairline concealer he's come up on yet. Real shit, if there were any feasible way to hoop in Skateboard's P new favorite hat, LBJ would be throwing it down in V. Westwood, on the wood. But let this be a PSA to everyone else: You are not Pharrell. Stop trying to be. Perhaps with Miami in the rearview mirror, LeBron's tastes will tamper down.
Paul George moonlights in a mariachi band
Where: NBA All-Star weekend, New Orleans
When: February 2014
Your boy PG has got to be stopped. Not from flourishing on the court, but from trying to keep up with the Jonses Westbrooks on that high-fashion, next-wave attempts. Dude's off-court looks are just one garish, trying-too-hard x 1000 fails after another. There are too many to choose from but this Mariachi joint works because, just, why? There's absolutely no reason to literally roll like a desperado. If this were an isolated incident we'd just assume he lost a bet, but...
Nick Cannon meme-ing himself into oblivion
Where: Good Morning America, New York
When: March 31, 2014
Brick Cannon tried to pull a white-face stunt earlier in the year and that's sadly not even his worst offense at the mid-point of the calendar. The alphet would be an eyesore of snowblinding proportions on it's own, but he capped it off with cheetah print-dyed hair. Cheetah print. Let's all stand up and salute Cam'ron for putting dude on that Instagram screen as he rightly deserved.
