Street art burst into the mainstream fully in 2011. Museum shows, including the monumental Art In The Streets, helped build an increasing momentum. Beyond the gallery walls and museum halls, street art also busily built a whole new buzz — mural projects and festivals. Every town, city, and country now has something dope going up on dilapidated walls. Props are due to Atlanta (for Living Walls), Baltimore (for Open Walls), and Honolulu (Pow Wow) in the USA, all three of which are changing their communities for the better. With these events going strong, bringing art back to the streets is becoming increasingly popular. Public art has a whole new set of powerful voices. We're celebrating those.
Sebastian Buck, founder/writer of unurth.com, offered his thoughts for our 2011 list. This year, we tap the talented RJ Rushmore of Vandalog. He is, shall we say, hip to the scene and gave his opinion of the best of the best in street art right now.
