School officials in North Carolina may think mace and students are a good mix. But students and skinny jeans? Not so much.
According to WECT6, the New Hanover County School System has been working to make dress code revisions since April and has invited students and parents to discuss the suggested changes. But there’s one proposal that’s being met with a considerable amount of resistance: a ban on skinny jeans.
In a document posted online, the school district is proposing to prohibit students from wearing "excessively tight fitting pants unless covered by a top or dress to the appropriate length." Students who do not adhere to the dress code will be asked to change, while numerous violations could result in out-of-school suspension.
But, as we all know, skinny jeans and leggings have been around for a minute. Why are they such an issue now?
Jeannette Nichols, the New Hanover County School Board vice chair, told WECT one of the reasons behind the ban is because "bigger girls" were getting bullied for wearing tight pants—a reason that’s been used even at the college level.
After the school district posted the dress code online, it went on Twitter and asked for feedback. Students and parents quickly expressed their objections with #Policy8520, the official document name of the dress code.
