With the release of The Monuments Men right around the corner, more people are learning about the actual group that the film was inspired by. As curators, museum directors, artists, and scholars, the men and women of the Monuments Men worked to preserve as many paintings and other art objects as they could during WWII and the Nazi plunder.
To honor them, the National World War II Museum in New Orleans has announced that a Monuments Men gallery will be included in their upcoming Liberation Pavilion expansion project. Robert Edsel, the man who literally wrote the book on the Monuments Men, called the gallery "a journey into the heart of the greatest treasure hunt in history." The gallery is expected to open in 2016 and The Monuments Men film hits theaters on February 7.
