The Australian light festival "Vivid Sydney" recently celebrated the 200th anniversary of The Benevolent Society, Australia's first charity. Included in the festivities was this installation courtesy of Designworks. Entitled Hundreds and Thousands, this interactive light tunnel is meant as a beacon of hope for the people of Australia, spread by those who walk through it and those who contribute digitally. The LEDs respond to tweets from Aussies that include the #hopesforchange hashtag. The Benevolent Society also shares the tweets online with a running tally of "hopes shared so far." This is a much better use of social media than the typical primetime television hashtags or #AskDraya slander.
