Philanthropist Peter Lewis passed away at the age of 80 on Saturday, November 23, but he leaves behind a legacy that the art world will not soon forget. From the time he joined the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum board of trustees in 1993 until his departure in 2005, Lewis donated a total of $77 million dollars to the institution, more than any other board member or outside supporter. Lewis was also the CEO of the auto insurance company Progressive, a supporter of marijuana legalization efforts in multiple states, and donated over $220 million dollars to his alma mater, Princeton University.
