Former NFL running back Nick Chubb has announced his retirement from the league at just 30 years old.
The former Browns star shared news of his retirement from the NFL on Aug. 21 with an Instagram post. “Today’s the day I’ve been avoiding for a while,” Chubb wrote. “Twelve-year-old me could never imagine this day, and 30-year-old me is wondering where all the time has gone. I’ve known for some time now, but I’m finally ready to share that I’m done playing football. I wanted to end my career on a healthy note, along with a winning season, and I was able to do that.”
In a lengthy post detailing his hopes and wishes for his career, Chubb spoke about how what he accomplished was limited due to injuries. “Dealing with injuries was something else that wasn’t part of the plan,” he wrote."The only thing I could control after hiring my knee twice was getting back up, getting back to work, and getting back on the field. And I was able to do that both times.”
“But I will tell you, going through a devastating knee injury at 19 is a lot different than going through one at 28,” he continued, before offering advice to his peers about the next step of their lives after they leave the NFL. “I say this to all my brothers still on the field, still in the heat of it: There’s a life waiting for you after football, too,” he said. “And health is the real wealth.”
After being picked by the Browns in the 2nd round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Chubb rushed for at least eight touchdowns in each of his first five seasons. After injuring his MCL and damaging his ACL in 2023, he missed the rest of the season and broke his foot in Dec. 2024.
He returned from injuries and had only run for six touchdowns and 838 yards in 23 games for the Browns and the Houston Texans since then.
