According to the EPA, the national miles per gallon average made it's biggest jump ever, an increase of 1.4 gallons, to climb to its best height ever, 23.8 mpg. Over the past five years, the average has jumped up 16 percent, a result of a high focus from auto manufacturers to produce smaller, more efficient vehicles while also pushing electric and hybrid vehicles. Honda posted the best average fuel economy at 26.4 mpg with Volkswagen a close second at 26.2 mpg. Had Hyundai not been under investigation, they would have torched everybody at 28.8 mpg.
