Intro

Concept cars can be awesome. They can ignite the fires of innovation and imagination. They can help us see and decide where the auto industry is going. They can also just be plain stupid.

Rinspeed Presto

15. Rinspeed Presto

Year: 2002
Country Of Origin: Germany
Stupid Feature: Can change from a 9-foot two-seater to a 12-foot four-seater
Complex Says: Rinspeed occasionally makes something awesome, like a Lotus that doubles as a submarine. It also often makes things that are just ridiculous, like backpacks for Smart ForTwos. This goofy looking machine is firmly in the latter category. Anything that looks like a mid '90s Mercedes as rendered for the movie Cars would.

Tang Hua Book of Songs

14. Tang Hua Book of Songs

Year: 2008
Country Of Origin: China
Stupid Feature: Looks like a cartoon shoe, sounds like a bad fantasy epic
Complex Says: The Tang Hua Book of Songs looks like Krusty the Clown's footwear with an erection.

Peugeot Honey-B

13. Peugeot Honey-B

Year: 2007
Country Of Origin: France
Stupid Feature: Phallic, top-heavy, tandem seating arrangement
Complex Says: Concept cars often seem to have more moving parts than the nation of Bulgaria. This one has that and should really be opaque. I wouldn't want to be seen riding around town in a sky-high phallus.

Honda Fuya-Jo

12. Honda Fuya-Jo

Year: 1999
Country Of Origin: Japan
Stupid Feature: The steering wheel looks like a turntable, horrible-sounding semi-vertical seats
Complex Says: In an attempt to create a party on wheels, the Fuya-Jo's hair-brained designer just created an uncomfortable ride-along vacuum cleaner that looks suspiciously like a dalek.

Opel Flow

11. Opel Flow

Year: 2010
Country Of Origin: Germany
Stupid Feature: Solar power, no space for people
Complex Says: Opel, GM's European wing, says that in the year 2049 we'll all be driving solar-powered cars like this one. Apparently, the driver sits on the uncomfortable-looking ridge and controls the car with nothing more than pure hope.

MAG

10. MAG

Year: 2008
Country Of Origin: Slovakia
Stupid Feature: Magnetically operated
Complex Says: It's a reverse delta, magnetically powered, car that looks like an unusual splice between a bobsled and a backward big-wheel. It totally ignores the fact that there are no magnetic roads for this thing to work on. What's not to like?

Kassou

9. Kassou

Year: 2008
Country Of Origin: Japan
Stupid Feature: Is an accordion, wings
Complex Says: Why does a car need to grow and shrink vertically like an accordion? Why does a car need vestigial wings? Why do so many modern concept cars look like suppositories?

Peugeot Egochine

8. Peugeot Egochine

Year: 2010
Country Of Origin: France
Stupid Feature: Is obviously a repurposed Gilette concept
Complex Says: It's a men's razor with an engine. We're not sure why the micro-vibrations of a Gilette Fusion need V8 power, but we're not crack-addled designers. It claims to draw inspiration from Figoni-bodied cars, but that's just an insult to all who love classic French automobiles.

Assystem City Car

7. Assystem City Car

Year: 2008
Country Of Origin: France
Stupid Feature: Biometric drunkness detector
Complex Says: Not only is this car saddled with a bajillion idiotic entertainment features displayed on a HUD, but it looks like a space-faring platypus's helmet. Not cool.

eRinGo

6. eRinGo

Year: 2009
Country Of Origin: France
Stupid Feature: Looks like a keg
Complex Says: This is clearly the bastard child of a beer keg and South Park's The Entity. Riding The Entity probably would be more tolerable when drowning in beer.

Peugeot Ozone

5. Peugeot Ozone

Year: 2010
Country Of Origin: France
Stupid Feature: Subwoofer-inspired design
Complex Says: Why learn anything about the fuel cell of the Ozone when you already know that it is filled with beans, or chicken noodle soup. Alternatively, it's a massive, mobile subwoofer. It's sure as hell not a car.

Aurora Safety Car

4. Aurora Safety Car

Year: 1957
Country Of Origin: U.S.
Stupid Feature: Cthulu-esque bodywork, pedestrian scooper
Complex Says: The Aurora, in its quest for safety, had many brilliant features that are now commonplace, like a collapsible steering column, seat belts, a roll cage, and a padded instrument cluster. It also has some other, less normal features, like a shin-busting bumper that was designed to "scoop up pedestrians without injury," seats that swiveled to face rearward if a collision seemed imminent, and a massively convex windshield. We think that after the bumper broke the shins of a pedestrian, and after the bulbous protrusion broke said walker's hip, the seats swiveled away to spare the passengers the sight of an already mangled person cracking his head on the bizarre windshield.

Nissan Pivo

3. Nissan Pivo

Year: 2005
Country Of Origin: Japan
Stupid Feature: Cockpit spins about for no reason
Complex Says: Even when ignoring the fact that the Pivo looks like an overly cheery, anime-inspired, motorized suppository, it's still stupid. While it is mildly amusing that the cockpit spins about, why would the driver want to?

Peugeot Globule

2. Peugeot Globule

Year: 2009
Country Of Origin: France
Stupid Feature: Looks infectious, would fall apart like a Lego car in an accident
Complex Says: Why converse with your friends and family when you could be entertained by rearranging your stupid car on the fly? The name is terrible too. Would you rather say, "I have an Aventador," or "I have a Globule." In one situation, you could be mistaken for having a professional bull-fighter on retainer. In the other, you just would seem like you need an decongestant.

Ford Nucleon

1. Ford Nucleon

Year: 1954
Country Of Origin: U.S.
Stupid Feature: Nuclear reactor
Complex Says: The initial thought of nuclear-powered cars involves horrible crashes, but the truth is even worse. Just imagine hearing this on the news: "There was a meltdown in the Shady Acres development earlier today when a teen driver's aftermarket reactor core malfunctioned. The manufacturer, Corez4Speed, has stated that it was improperly installed." If this was the future, street tuners wouldn't just hurt our eyes, they would melt them.
