We've been waiting for the BMW i8 to show up in production spec with a price tag for years now and the wait is finally over. The i8 is here, and we're free to pour over the press release and learn all about this incredible car.
The i8's hybrid powertrain is made up of a 1.5 liter turbo I3 that sends an impressive for its size 231 horses and 235 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. The front wheel are powered by a 131 hp/184 lb-ft of torque electric motor, which makes for a grand total of 362 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. In speed terms, this is a 0-62 mph time of 4.4 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.
It's a plug in hybrid, so fuel economy is going to be defined rather nebulously, using a combination of MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) from charging and actual miles per gallon, but the number is still an impressive 94 mpg. This is, however, referring to the European test methods, so expect to see the EPA's number come out somewhere in the high 60s. Impressive for a car this fast.
The price? $135,925. It's bad, but it's not as bad as it could have been.
