12 Cool Cars That Don't Have a Roof at All

Most cars have roofs, and sometimes those roofs can be retracted, thus exposing the occupants to the glory of the out-doors with it's sunlight and fresh air. Of course, some car designers skipped right to that last part and just never bothered to put a roof on the car in the first place.

This isn't exactly the best thing in the world when it's not warm and sunny, but hell, the cars are pretty cool, so we don't give much of a shit. That's why we've rounded up 12 Cool Cars That Don't Have a Roof at All.

Lotus, despite it's constant business problems, is one of the coolest companies out there, and the original Lotus Eleven that raced Le Mans in the '50s is one of the coolest Loti. The Westfield XI is a modernized version for road use that still adheres to Colin Chapman's philosophy of lightness over all other concerns.

Price: 250,000 Euro (Appx. $345,000)

Its name means "truth" and it looks like a deranged, squirrel-eating demon with a tiny human head sticking out the top. To add to this weird machine's appeal it's also designed to work as an FIA-certified race car as well. It runs on an M5 5.0L V10 engine that offers 500hp and the car only weighs 2,400 lbs. That means 0-62 in 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 215. Fact: When these cars started in 2009, there were only 15 employees at the company.

Every now and then you meet someone who who just wants as much crazy and adrenaline in their life as possible. This car doesn't even have a windshield! Draped with carbon fiber and based on the Aventador, the open-top allows the 217mph to freely re-arrange the driver's face; brilliant. The car sold for an insane 2.1 million euro.

The SLR McLaren was an amazing collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren, that was made even better by adding the (totally awesome, and I'm not at all biased) name of one of the greatest drivers of all time and chopping to roof off for that cool vintage race car look. It has a 5.4L supercharged V8 that puts out 641hp and has a top speed of 217 mph. Only 75 of these beauties were built and were the last of the SLRs.

It may be best known for making Jeremy Clarkson look even more like a frightening troll, but the sheer performance and capability of the Ariel Atom is what makes it one of the best sports cars ever made. Also, it double deserves its spot on this list because it's not just going without a roof, it pretty much doesn't even have a body around that K24 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine.

At the time, the jaguar XKD was one of the most advanced cars in the world. It used an aluminum monocoque when steel body-on-frame construction was still standard for cars as well as an advanced aerodynamic body. This thing dominated Le Mans in '55, '56, and '57.

Asymmetry is hard to pull off in cars. Most of the time, it just ends up looking like a stupid, Mad Libs-esque mash up or random design elements, but every now and then, it's something brilliant, like the 1960 Plymouth XNR Concept seen here. It's a masterpiece.

Could a weird retro pseudo-car be any more charming than this insane contraption? It's a bizarre three-wheeled (the name fits, right?) burn-out machine designed for hooligans with a little too much money, and we want one in every color, with shark teeth, and flames, and a pin up girl.

There's a very small chance that you might see this beautiful Aston on the road one day, as two of them were built for road use. The car was made in celebration of Aston Martin's 100-year history and calls on the 1959 Le Mans and Nürburgring winning race car DBR1 for inspired design. The car was built in only 6 months (maybe that's why it had trouble starting) and debuted at the ADAC Zurich 24 Hours of Nürburgring race this year, driven by Aston Martin CEO Dr Ulrich Bez. We just wish they were built for us.

The Project 7 is a one-off design study that takes the gorgeously stunning F-Type, cilps off the top and a seat, adds some racing livery and a gigantic wing, and has the racing aero behind the head, reminiscent of the old Type Ds. "Project 7" refers Jaguar winning Le Mans seven times between 1951-1990.

The only take that Lamborghini could go with on the Veneno convertible is to make a roadster with no roof. It has to be the crazy route, because the car itself is just so bananas. It has the same 750hp V12 engine, but now when you're testing out its 220mph top speed, you can put your hand straight up and get your skin ripped off.

This is the first car. It was built back in 1886 and it had a single-cylinder, 4-stroke, 0.954L engine that created 0.737hp. Its top speed was 9.94 mph. The engine was technically, more or less, equal to a single horse. Just think, once upon a time, the addition of a roof to a car was a new feature.
