Blindsided! The Dirtiest Sucker Punches of All Time
Is there such a thing as unsportsmanlike conduct in the MMA? We guess so. After Paul Daley sucker-punched Josh Koscheck following his loss at UFC 113 on Saturday, president Dana White vowed that Daley would never fight in another UFC bout again. But this isn
Puncher: Kermit Washington, Los Angeles Lakers
Date: 12/9/1977
Victim: Rudy Tomjanovich, Houston Rockets
Punishment: 26-game suspension
Complex Says: Rudy T missed the next five months of play and needed reconstructive surgery on his face due to a broken nose, and fractures to his face and skull. The Lakers had to pay up $3.2 million in a lawsuit settlement with Tomjanovich. L.A., millions of dollars, a broken face, and lots of plastic surgery? Is this the "Heidi Montag" story?
Puncher: Woody Hayes, Ohio State Buckeyes
Date: 12/29/1978
Victim: Charlie Bauman, Clemson Tigers
Punishment: Immediate firing
Complex Says: This was the sad ending to the HOF coach's career. Still, a 65-year-old coach going after a 20-something-year-old nose guard is kinda gangsta, in that demented-old-man sorta way.
Puncher: Buddy Ryan, Houston Oilers
Date: 1/2/1994
Victim: Kevin Gilbride, Houston Oilers
Punishment: None
Complex Says: Defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan and offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride had been feuding for weeks before a turnover precipitated this infamous incident. Defense wins you championships and frontin' on it can get you knocked the fuck out! Or at least a half-assed knockout attempt.
Unknown
Date: 1995
Victim: Edmundo "The Animal," Flamengo football club
Punishment: Unknown
Complex Says: Great video evidence that proves karma's the baddest bitch. Sorry Trina.
Puncher: Stephen Alexander, Washington Redskins
Date: 1998 preseason
Victim: Greg Spires, New England Patriots
Punishment: None
Complex Says: Cheap-shot low blows like that during the preseason? Yeah, that's some next level bitchassness.
Puncher: Marty McSorley, Boston Bruins
Date: 2/11/2000
Victim: Donald Brashear, Vancouver Canucks
Punishment: One-year suspension and 18 months of probation after an assault with a deadly weapon conviction
Complex Says: Brash suffered a grade-three concussion and missed several weeks before returning to the ice. McSorley never returned to the NHL after the hit. Hockey's a badass sport but this move was just bad, and ass.
Puncher: Owen Nolan, San Jose Sharks
Date: 1/1/2001
Victim: Grant Marshall, Dallas Stars
Punishment: 11-game suspension
Complex Says: Marshall missed one game as a result of the hit, prompting Nolan to say: "He obviously wasn't hurt that bad." Easy for you to say, Owen. Vicious head shots like this are what made the NHL rule change absolutely necessary this year.
Puncher: James Butler
Date: 11/23/2001
Victim: Richard Grant
Punishment: Convicted of aggravated assault and sentenced to four months at Rikers Island
Complex Says: Grant suffered a dislocated jaw and lacerated tongue which required 26 stitches. Butler's second trip to the pen came five years later when he was convicted of murdering Sam Kellerman (brother of boxing analyst Max Kellerman), whom he was living with. Of all sports, boxing seems to have the most tragic endings.
Puncher: Michael Barrett, Chicago Cubs
Date: 5/20/2006
Victim: A. J. Pierzynski, Chicago White Sox
Punishment: 10-game suspension
Complex Says: After scoring on a sacrifice fly, Pierzynski emphatically slapped home plate, prompting Barrett to snuff him immediately. This whole thing looks even better on video, but unfortunately the MLB keeps their tapes on tighter lock than a nun's hymen. Bud Selig, you smart man, you.
Puncher: LeGarrette Blount, Oregon Ducks
Date: 9/4/2009
Victim: Byron Hout, Boise State Broncos
Punishment: 8-game suspension
Complex Says: Hout's trash-talking after Boise State's win led to a valuable lesson learned: Win with class, or get laid on your ass.
