Undisputed boxing champion Terence “Bud” Crawford found himself at the center of a tense confrontation with Omaha police this weekend, just hours after being honored with a parade in his hometown, TMZ reports.
Video circulating online shows the undefeated fighter being forced out of a car at gunpoint by an officer during a late-night traffic stop. In the footage, Crawford can be seen with his hands raised as he carefully unbuckles his seatbelt, opens his door, and steps out of the vehicle. At one point, he tells the officer, “I ain’t reaching for no gun.”
The incident occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the Omaha Police Department. Authorities say officers spotted a vehicle driving recklessly near North 12th and Capitol Avenue, prompting the stop at Cass Street.
Police explained that while speaking with the driver, an officer saw a firearm on the floorboard. “For safety, all four occupants were ordered out of the vehicle at gunpoint,” the department’s statement said.
Crawford and the others were patted down, but investigators later determined that all occupants were legally licensed to carry firearms. A police supervisor and lieutenant were called to the scene at Crawford’s request.
The city’s mayor and police chief have now ordered an internal affairs review of the stop. Crawford has yet to comment on the situation.
The confrontation itself capped a day that began with Crawford receiving a hero’s welcome at a parade celebrating his stunning upset victory over Canelo Álvarez. The 42-0 champion currently holds titles at welterweight and super middleweight.
