August 1 is Emancipation Day and to honour the significance of the date, the Toronto Raptors issued a statement on its social media channels.

"Emancipation Day is recognized on the first of August to commemorate the abolishment of the practice of slavery, and the emancipation of enslaved people of African descent from the British empire," the statement wrote. "It is important to recognize that Indigenous peoples, along with Africans, were enslaved in the land that is now Canada. As we acknowledge our history, it is crucial that we celebrate and elevate the beautiful cultures that inspire so much of what we love as a Raptors community."

"Emancipation Day recognizes the end of slavery in Canada which went into effect August 1st, 1834. After 27 years of my advocacy, it is now recognized in Canada on a Motion by MP Majid Jowhari in 2021. Alongside the team's statement is a quote from Rosemary Saflier, ex-president of the Ontario Black History Society.

"Emancipation Day recognizes the end of slavery in Canada which went into effect August 1st, 1834," Sadlier wrote. "After 27 years of my advocacy, it is now recognized in Canada on a Motion by MP Majid Jowhari in 2021. This recognition helps to raise awareness about a past that many may not know, about the enslavement of both First Nations and Africans. It allows for brave discussions and speaks to the hope that all Canadians aspire to - freedom. Freedom to be included, accepted, and to flourish."

The Raptors have a long history of commemorating significant historic days, though it hasn't always done each one well.

Back in March, the team apologized after releasing a heavily-criticized video about Women's History Month.
