Prior to their match against Southampton, reports were going around that manager Gus Poyet was trying to determine who he would choose between defenders Santiago Vergini and Wes Brown. Obviously, hindsight is 20/20 but if Poyet did opt to go with Brown, Sunderland would have probably only lost today by seven.
In the 12th minute, Vergini attempted to clear out a ball in the box, but instead, he perfectly placed it in the back of the wrong net. Luckily for Santiago, this own goal was one of two in the match and even with that gaffe, Sunderland still lost, 8-0. Yikes!
