It was the moment that the supporters of Donald Trump were hoping for. Lindsey Vonn fell short in her pursuit of a medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics after finishing sixth in the women's super-G event. And since people take some sort of odd satisfaction in kicking people while they're down, the Twitter trolls came out in full force, getting payback over a remark Vonn made regarding Trump last month.

@lindseyvonn Karma will always bite you... that’s what you get for trying to get political when you should have just focused on the Olympics. Tisk tisk, but hey, now you don’t have to worry about not going to the White House! Only winners go to the White House, right Hillary?

I just spent last 20 min's reading thru tweets directed at @lindseyvonn. Sickened & disgusted once again by the lack of humanity that engulfs our country. She just raced her damn heart out & Trump supporters gloat/cheer/celebrate her inability to medal. Is this what we've become?

It’s ok Julie. Not everyone has to like me but my family loves me and I sleep well at night. I work hard and try to be the best person I can be. If they don’t like me 🤷🏼‍♀️ their loss I guess... Thank you for the support🙏🏻❤️ https://t.co/EaySJE7QAe

"Well I hope to represent the people of the United States, not the president," Vonn told CNN's Alpine Edge in January. "I take the Olympics very seriously and what they mean and what they represent, what walking under our flag means in the opening ceremony. I want to represent our country well. I don't think that there are a lot of people currently in our government that do that."

Former U.S. women's soccer player Julie Foudy came to Vonn's defense, calling out the people who would "gloat/cheer/celebrate her inability to medal."

Vonn responded to Foudy's tweet, shaking off the trolls like a true professional and expressing a desire to just be the best person she can be. "Not everyone has to like me but my family loves me and I sleep well at night," she wrote. "I work hard and try to be the best person I can be."

Vonn still has two more chances at medaling in the downhill and alpine events.
