A 10-year-old email exchange discovered during the investigation into the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal suggests that Penn State officials—including revered head coach Joe Paterno—considered turning Sandusky in to outside authorities, but ultimately decided not to, seemingly at Paterno's request.

The emails, between Penn State's president, vice president, and athletic director, show that the trio initially proposed reporting Sandusky to the Department of Welfare after he was accused in February 2001 of raping a boy in the shower at an on campus athletic facility. However, after having a conversation with Paterno, athletic director Tim Curley wrote that he was "uncomfortable" taking the case to outside authorities. It's not known what Curley and Paterno talked about, but it's clear from the emails that the Penn State officials knew they had a problem with Sandusky, but chose to handle the matter internally.
