A consensus hasn't been reached as to why a Tesla Model S caught fire while charging, but that isn't stopping Tesla from being cautious. Elon Musk said the company will send customers new wall charger adapters in the coming weeks.
A Tesla official told Jalopnik in an email: "In December 2013, Tesla provided an over-the-air software update that addressed potential overheating at the socket and would even protect a customer if there was bad wiring on the house side. We believe this fully addresses the problem. However, to provide additional protection for Model S customers, we have designed a new wall adapter with a thermal fuse."
While Tesla maintains its charger wasn't at fault for the fire, the fire department blames an electrical failure in the charging system. Either way, it shouldn't be happening again.
