The Best Outdoor Courts for Playing Pick-Up Basketball in New York

This is perhaps the most famous outdoor basketball court in America. Overlooked by Polo Grounds Towers, Rucker Park’s sacred status is backed by decades of history and ongoing lore. But this ain’t just a tourist site; it’s still roughly for basketball what Minton’s was for jazz musicians. It’s be great or be broken on that court, especially during the famed Entertainer’s Basketball Classic.

There have been numerous paeans written about Rucker over the years. Let’s cut this one short: If it’s good enough for Dr. J and Allen Iverson, it’s good enough for you.

The Cage sits within an area teeming with NYU brats and fair-weather comedy fans (the Comedy Cellar is across the street). But they will never take The Cage from us. The smaller size courts and the chain-linked fences that confine them invites physical, bruising basketball. But flying elbows build character, and The Cage has molded legends. The late Anthony Mason is one of the few greats who made it through these legendary courts.

These courts aren’t as historically significant or worshiped as some of New York’s other courts (and neither are most), but they’re definitely worth a visit. If you make it past the park and the tourists who come with it, you’ll find a beautiful structure that juts into the East River. It holds well-maintained courts alongside what’s arguably the best view of the Manhattan skyline. And get this: The Brooklyn Bridge Park Basketball Courts are lit after the sun goes down. Not lit as in “lit,” but as in actual lights. No more fumbling around in the dark for buckets. There’s great places to play basketball, and then there’s spoiled. 

The sheer splendor of Manhattan’s Upper West Side will make you realize the brutal reality of your financial situation, and the trek through Central Park will test your endurance. But make it through these obstacles and you’ll be rewarded. There are two sets of these smaller-than-regulation courts: one between 79th and 85th streets and another at 97th Street. Both offer great views of the city. With photo ID, you can also get a basketball loaned to you for free, which is about the only free thing you can get around those parts. 

Resting deep north in Manhattan, Dyckman Park is a hassle for anybody who’s not from the Bronx or above 34th Street. Quick research changes the question from “How can I get there?” to “Am I worthy?” The site is known for the Dyckman Basketball Tournament, which was founded to revive an Inwood community rocked by the crack epidemic in the 1980s. That takes place in the summer. Still, don’t touch these courts unless you’re nice in the winter, fall, and spring.
