The Clippers have been fined $250,000 for violating NBA rules during their free agent pitch meeting with DeAndre Jordan, but sadly, it has nothing to do with the hilarious saga that unfolded in early July when Jordan broke his verbal commitment to the Mavericks and decided to re-up with Los Angeles instead.
You remember that, right? It involved a day-long emoji back-and-forth on Twitter that included players, coaches, and even the official accounts of actual NBA teams, before culminating in a bunch of the Clippers players and coaches essentially holding Jordan hostage inside his house until the league's moratorium was lifted and he was able to officially re-sign.
The fine, however, wasn't for any of this nonsense. The league determined that during L.A.'s original July 2 meeting with Jordan, a potential third-party endorsement opportunity was included as part of the presentation, which isn't allowed because teams could theoretically use things like that to compensate players above and beyond the limits that are in place under the salary cap.
