Not to be outdone by the English Premier League’s Peter Crouch, the rest of the world’s strikers stepped up their game this weekend, treating us to some absolutely stunning goals. Here are our five favorites—including two incredible Real Madrid strikes, a long range scorcher from the MLS, and more.

David Trezeguet Still Has It
David Trezeguet always had an eye for a spectacular goal, and this weekend the former Juventus star showed fans of his new team, River Plate of the Argentine league, that he’s still got it. As the ball is played into the area from a corner, Trezeguet drifts away from his marker and when the defender fails to clear, the Frenchman hits a beautiful half volley that glides into the top corner.
Maicon Santos Scores a Screamer
MLS stand up! D.C. United’s Maicon Santos kicks off the scoring against FC Dallas with a goal Cristiano Ronaldo himself would be proud of. Receiving the ball wide on the right wing, Santos spots some space in the parting defence, takes a couple of touches and unleashes the hammer.
Another Cristiano Ronaldo classic
Like he was ever going to let Karim Benzema hog the spotlight for too long. CR7 made it 2-0 to Real Madrid with this 30 metre thunderbolt of a strike, and then wrapped up the win and another decent day at the office with his second goal and another assist, before presumably saving a small child from a burning building and going home with a supermodel.
A Russian rocket from Zenit St Petersburg
I’ll be honest, I’m not an avid follower of Russian soccer, but if there are goals like this incredible strike from Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Sergei Semak flying in every weekend, we might all need to pay more attention.
Karim Benzema does a ‘Van Basten’
Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has scored 17 league goals this season. It would be safe to say that none of them come close to this one. The French striker opened the scoring for Los Merengues against Osasuna on Saturday evening with this stunning volley, with the assist coming from Cristiano Ronaldo after a typically mesmerising run down the wing.
Soccer aficionados will spot the similarity between this goal and Dutch legend Marco Van Basten’s wonder strike from the European Championships in 1988 – check the two out side by side here.
