Frank Kearse, an NFL defensive end who has played for six teams in his five-year career, was released by the New England Patriots last week. This week, on Wednesday, he was treated at a hospital after allegedly being stabbed by his girlfriend, according to The Sun Chronicle.

The incident reportedly started with an argument in their Mansfield, Mass., apartment. Kearse's girlfriend, Dominique Hooper, allegedly stabbed him in the upper abdomen.

Mansfield police learned of the incident when they received a call from the hospital, The Sun Chronicle reports. Kearse told hospital officials he was moving that day (which is plausible, considering he was released) and hurt himself while transporting a cardboard box that held knives. When police investigated at the apartment, Hooper told them a version of the same story.

However, neighbors told police they heard a loud argument, and detectives questioned Hooper's account. She reportedly began to cry and admitted to brandishing a knife. Hooper reportedly said Kearse used a cardboard box to defend himself.

The Sun Chronicle reports police found a kitchen knife with dried blood on it in the apartment.

Hooper was arrested. She was freed on bail and is due back in court Sept. 30. Hooper has pleaded innocent to assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon and domestic assault and battery.

Kearse, 27, was a seventh-round pick out of Alabama A&M in 2011. He has since played for the Miami Dolphins, Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans, Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins, and the Patriots.
