Another day, another salty Ben Simmons social media post.
Simmons is quickly developing a reputation for being salty on social media and his latest comments on Lebron James’ Instagram are no different.
So basically it’s Simmons and Embiid against LaVar – you still with us here?
Simmons' reaction to the shoes comes as a cheap shot at a brand which has basically become a meme since it was created, after LaVar shunned large offers from Nike and Adidas to start up Big Baller Brand (and if you’re looking for a laugh, LaVar even recently modelled some of their clothes on their website).
Of course, as part of setting up the brand, the Big Baller Brand signed Lonzo as their signature athlete and released his first signature shoe, the ‘ZO2’, with a Lakers colourway to boot.
The Triple B needed a big performance from Lonzo to really announce the brand to the world but unfortunately, there couldn’t have been a worse debut for the Ball family. Lonzo’s summer league debut was awful, shooting 2-15 from the field with 3 turnovers and the internet was not kind to him at all.
Yeah, that just about sums up people's opinion of BBB.
You would expect Lonzo to come out and make amends after such a poor performance, and quite rightly he turned it on against the 76ers, finishing with 36p-11a-8r-5s and sealing his finest performance in Lakers colours.
One problem though.
HE WASN’T EVEN WEARING BIG BALLER BRAND SHOES.
It just fits the narrative so well that Ball's best performance of his young career comes while wearing a shoe that wasn’t designed by his father.
This was the point that Simmons chimed in and the Lakers fans came to him in their droves to denounce him for being a hater, which is sure to only build the rivalry between these two franchises. There’s nothing better to get us through the doldrums of the NBA off-season than some social media beef and we're sure LaVar will respond to this at some point if history is any precedent.
The more tweets these players fire off during their holidays the more the anticipation grows for their first meeting of the season – and we're sure that the date will be circled in a few calendars.
Hopefully when these teams finally meet it will provide a chance for Simmons and Embiid to make a statement to the Ball family on the court, rather than through their phones.
