Former NFL quarterback Erik Kramer—who spent more than a decade in the league with the FalconsLionsBears, and Chargers—is reportedly recovering from a suicide attempt that took place on Tuesday night in Calabasas, Calif. According to law enforcement officials who spoke with NBC News late yesterday, Kramer shot himself inside of a motel but survived the shooting and is now being treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Kramer's ex-wife Marshawn Kramer spoke with NBC News to confirm the suicide attempt and also explained that, in the past, Kramer has dealt with depression that she believes is the result of the hits that he took during his time in the NFL.

"He is a very amazing man, a beautiful soul, but he has suffered depression since he was with the Bears," she said. "I can promise you he is not the same man I married."

She continued by saying that she believes Kramer suffered a brain injury playing football and has never been able to recover from it.

"I know Erik and I would still be together if not for his football injury," she said, before linking his suicide attempt to the injury. "He's such a good dad and he would not do this to his son. This is a brain injury."

Stay tuned for further details about Kramer's condition.
