The lone goal came from a header courtesy of Costa Rica's Bryan Ruiz at the 45' mark. Here it is in all of its glory:
And that put the kibosh on the goals for the duration of the early match.
Though the score may not wow you the game was significant for all of Group D. At 2-0, Costa Rica is advancing to the final 16. That's over. Done. Finished. The loss also eliminates our old colonial oppressors: England. Another disappointing exit for a European nation following on the heels of Spain. That leaves Italy and Uruguay. Those two teams match-up on Tuesday for a chance to advance into the knockout stage. A win (or tie) for Italy gets them in, whereas Uruguay can only advance with a victory.
