LIFE SPAN: 1992-2010
RISE TO POWER: Hummer started life as a consumer version of the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle used by the U.S. military. When AM General (owned by AMC) sold the rights to GM in 1998, GM built the H2 model based off one of their SUV platforms, creating one of the most popular SUVs on the market.
DEATH KNELL: Hummer became the poster child for needless consumption when fuel prices shot through the roof and environmental awareness became the hot-button topic. Its horrid MPG rating and poor crash tests became cause for concern. When GM entered bankruptcy agreements, it attempted to sell the brand to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company Ltd. When the deal failed to go through, GM decided to kill the brand.
