It’s hard to overstate the grip New Balance has on the sneaker game in 2022. With a long-term focus on their manufacturing plants in the US and UK, New Balance has always had a reputation for quality and craftsmanship. We always kinda knew they were the best sneakers in the game, but … you couldn’t flex on anyone in a pair of New Balance. That was for the other brands. The big-name collabs. The high fashion crossovers. The retro models with decades of history and pop culture credentials.

Somewhere in the last few years though, a monumental shift has occurred. New Balance started to up the ante. The brand had always had a tendency to hit with collabs but, now? Now the hits were landing in a consistent rhythm. There were flurries of hits. Jabs, hooks and uppercuts. Tekken combos of collabs that came out of nowhere and left us looking like dizzy avatars stuck in the corner of the screen. The Joe Fresh 992s into the WTAPS 992s, then came the Aime Leon Dore 550s, the Casablanca 327s and the Salehe Bembury 2002rs – and that was just 2020. It was relentless.

The New Balance co-sign is now the most coveted in the game. The cache of collaborators has been masterfully curated by NB’s collab king  Joe Grondin, and he isn’t giving just anyone a shot at putting their paws on a 2002R. After Joe Fresh, Teddy Santis, Salehe Bembury … who comes next? It’s time to flip the game upside down with a collab from the bottom of the map.

Australia’s very own Up There have got next. Granted a blank canvas in the form of a 2002R, the Melbourne-via-Brisbane boutique and brand stepped up and knocked this one out of the park – quite literally. This one is uniquely Australian, right down to the promo video featuring backyard cricket, Hills Hoists, beaches, bushland and one of those little clam pools every Australian has at some point in their life.

Hitting the pinnacle and nailing it with a New Balance collab. It could have been a moment to put Up There front and center, to cash out with a global release and try to get a look in a Jack Harlow video. But, instead, the team put Australia on their back – and their tongue. They’re taking us all with them and doing what they can to make sure we all get a pair.

Talking to Complex AU, Up There’s James Barrett explains that this one was 12 years in the making – and they did it for everyone who has supported the store in getting this far.
