Every sneaker collector has a different approach, every sneaker collector has a different focus, every sneaker collector has a different story. Just like we did with prominent sneakerheads a while back, we decided to reach out to a number of sneaker collectors to get their take on collecting—how they started, what they focus on, and where they think this whole thing is headed. And even those who deny the title of "collector" have enough pairs in reserve to qualify. To see what they had to say, check out 20 Sneakerheads Discuss the Reality of Sneaker Collecting and feel free to share your own thoughts with us below.

I don't collect, I wear! I'm a firm believer that getting fresh starts with your feet first.
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?:
I've been wearing all my life! Ha, fell in love with sneakers at the age of 10.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?:
No difference, we should all be committed to the crazy house for our obsession with rubber and leather.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?:
Very hard to answer but I will say that in this day and age it's sad that a regular kid can't walk into a store on a release date and buy a pair of kicks just because he or she likes the color or style of a shoe. Sad, isn't it?
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?:
Maybe because SNEAKERS ARE ONLY WORTH WHAT OUR STUPID ASSES ARE WILLING TO PAY FOR THEM!
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?:
I flew a friend back from Japan for a few pair of linen Air Force 1's
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?:
Linen AF1, white/white hi AF1, my Strawberry Quik Bespokes.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?:
I lost a bet to a friend and had to buy an Air Mag-$4,200-and part of the bet was to wear it... I haven't paid up on that part of the bet yet.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?:
I agree... Don't collect.... WEAR YOUR DAMN SHOES!!!
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?:
Ummm let's see I can wear a different pair of sneakers every day for almost eight years, and I'm still hunting down a few gems I'm missing.

Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?:
I got into sneakers in the middle of 1988. In Brooklyn, in the late 80s/early 90s, basketball was at its peak in popularity and the sneaker companies were innovating like crazy. "Fresh" started from the ground, and the "quest for fresh" to an adolescent had everything to do with chasing girls. I'm pretty sure that was the formula for getting me hooked on kicks. My mom wouldn't spend more than $50 on shoes for me, so I went out & got a paper route so I could pay the difference & get exactly what I wanted. I built the route up to earn enough money to buy shoes on my own and as often as I thought necessary. I don't collect. I love the product & the brands & wear everything I buy.
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?:
My first pair was the Air Jordan 4 (White/Red) in 1989. I had at least one color way in every original Jordan from 4-14 (except 9). But as I've said, I don't collect. I wear everything, sometimes to death. When I get sick of stuff I give it away either to charity or to friends/relatives that wear my size. I don't collect.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?:
These are two terms that I can't identify with. As I see it, a collector is someone that stockpiles & builds inventory in order to show of f or hold value. I collect shot glasses, I wear sneakers. In my eyes, a sneaker head is someone that displays extreme thirst and obsession & engages in the product for social acceptance as opposed to a passion inspired by sport or fashion. Not sure others will see it that way, and I'm not saying my definition is right, but that's how I see it.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?:
If you've got your eyes open and are looking for the right things, there are definitely deals to be had on some older stuff. I've picked up a few under the radar pairs for really cheap over the past few months. However, prior year models of shoes that have been recently retro' d and hyped will still be too expensive for me on the secondary market, as the current retro drives up the price for past year's issues.
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?:
In the 18+ years that I've been in this industry, it's been a bit of a roller coaster. There have been years where the product is really hot and resale value is incredibly high and years where nobody cares and stuff sits on shelves and goes on clearance. It's very much an industry of extreme highs and lows. That said when the industry is hot and trends are leaning toward athletic inspired footwear these newer hyped releases will still be valuable. When the trend shifts and people change their focus, the value will go down. Something is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. Over production could hurt resale values as well. Look at baseball cards...
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?:
Winning the Jordan (Jumpman23) XX8 Days of Flight contest was wild. It's super cool to have a 1 of 1 Air Jordan shoe in my possession. Just wish it was in my size. Close 2nd was winning the Paranorman Foams. I've gotten lucky on social media twice in a short period of time. The sneaker gods are real...when you look out for people and do the right thing, they smile down on you.
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?:
It's very tough to choose 3 and I know the answer that I give today will be different tomorrow. Here's my best attempt... 1. Air Jordan Retro 3 (Black Cement) – this is my favorite sneaker of all time, so how could I not put it. 2. Flightposite 1 Silver (Euro Release Only 1999) – I traded two pairs of Air Max 95s for this back when they came out. Shoe is a little small (14 years later) but worn enough times where I can make it work. 3. Air Max 97 Premium Anniversary "MTV" (2007 FINL Exclusive) – I almost have this entire pack, but these are too wild and too sick. Honorable mention to Huarache Free Shield "Megatron" and Free Run 2 "DB". I really love both.
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?:
I definitely favor Nike & Jordan but love & respect all brands. My interest in sneakers began with Jordan's, so that is where the majority of my pairs are. But I have some cool stuff across the board in basketball, running and sportswear.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?:
I think the Hazelnut LeBron X was the most expensive shoe I've ever bought and I paid box price for it, $250 plus tax. I don't pay over box price and I don't get thirsty. If I miss a shoe, I move on to the next. There are a few things I would dip into my piggy bank for...Zoom Generation "First Game" and 112 Air Max 1s, 112 LeBron 7s or 8s for sure. Maybe a few others but doubt I'll come across them.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?:
They're 100% right. It's dumb and a waste of money.
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?:
Tough question for someone who's entire response to all of these questions denies even having a "collection". I'd say that as long as the brands continue to retro classics and put new twists on classic silhouettes as well as innovate and create, then I will continue to engage and acquire new. I will also continue to purge and get rid of the old. I won't hoard and I won't stockpile.
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?:
Not sure if it will ever die. I guess if there is one person out there doing it, then it's technically not dead. People still collect baseball cards and DVDs. I think it will slow down, and then got hot again. The cycle that I've lived thru over the years will continue with varying degrees of extreme.

Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?:
Honestly I'm not entirely sure how or why I got into collecting trainers, it all happened quite organically - I never was really a fan of wearing my trainers until they were battered (like "normal" people do), I'd always rather maintain them and get a new pair anyway regardless if I needed them or not. From there I began looking for and buying up shoes that my parents could not afford to buy me during my youth (pre-teens). As a youngster I always envied my mates as their parents got them the latest Jordans, Nike's, Reeboks etc my upbringing wasn't the easiest, especially as I had to wear brands like Gola, Hi-tech, British Knights, Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles trainers and Nicks. Why trainers? Why not I say, why collect anything in life? Trainers have always been very relevant to me and my interests, they are interesting and all have some kind of meaning along my lifetime. Everyone from family to friends thought I was crazy having 100, 200, 300 trainers stacked up - look how many crazy people there are in the world now.
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?:
Properly, consciously and consistently looking for good trainers ever since my 1st paid job in retail back in 1996 – wow that's a pretty long time ago. When the 1st paycheck that went into my account I went crazy and bought 5 pairs of Reebok Classic Workouts from JD Sports, after treating the family to dinner obviously – my collection is now in the region of 2500+ and sitting in storage.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?:
In my head the term "sneakerhead" describes an individual who likes what is going on in the sneakerworld NOW, not what happened 30/20 or 10 years ago, nostalgia does not even come into it as they were into other things years ago. Sneakerhead's only purchase or are wearing and have what blogs define as the latest must have, what the privileged influencers are wearing or get for free and more importantly what the brands are releasing/pushing on a weekly basis. A collector or hoarder is someone that has quite a few dead stock trainers in their collection. Collectors vary in terms of weather they are brand, theme or style loyal - or just love everything. He/she has a more defined list of trainers within their respected collection and knows what they want and are more selective with their current purchases in today's market. All the above is my opinion and my opinion only, you do not have to agree with me on these definitions this is just what I personally understand.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?:
Yes and no - it all depend on the individual seller and a bit of luck. There are real gems available right now and at reasonable prices. The GREAT stuff will hold its value and be out of bounds for me personally.
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?:
Good question - I'd say people will try to hold a high value for hype shoes. It will all come down to what people want to spend money on in years to come...Will LeBron James leave a legacy like MJ? Will anyone care about fly knits in the future? Will anything Mastermind command a ridiculous re-sell? If you check eBay on a regular basis there are a handful of hopeful individuals who are still waiting for that $2000+ sale on a $200 shoe. On the other hand if you check the sold/completed listings of some of these HYPE shoes a lot tend to go for less than the HYPE value or not at all. A great shoe will always hold its value regardless; very few "great" shoes are being released at the moment that will hold its value in the next 10years and just wait for that "sneaker" recession where nobody will care about anything – bargains will be available.
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?:
Still to this day I think it's unbelievable that brands send me free shoes...I don't complain and appreciate all the love from ALL brands. Working in the industry makes things easy for me to obtain shoes.
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?:
Nike Dunk High Pro SB – Supreme White/ College Orange 2003 adidas Super Ape Star 2003 Nike Lunar Fly knit HTM NRG Black/Midnight Fog - 2012
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?:
I go through phases rather than collecting certain styles. Everything started off on a Reebok classic Workout phase, then a Jordan phase, Nike SB phase, adidas phase then all of a sudden an EVERYTHING phase. Personally I appreciate all styles/designs of athletic footwear. Right now my selection process is pretty simple – will I ever wear the shoe? If yes accept or purchase, if no then pass.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?:
In relative terms at the time of purchase they were a pair of DS Nike Air Max 1 Kid Robots purchased on eBay for £198.58 - this was a lot for me at the time to be spending on a shoe. Today the Yeezy II's - they retailed for £235 here in the UK.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?:
F*CK OFF what do you know about anything! I joke. I justify things in my head and to people by explaining my career journey – I've been very privileged to work within the industry for many years. Personally I love what I do and it all comes naturally to me as it's a job that I am personally passionate about and have extensive knowledge on. My work has allowed me to be fortunate enough to see shoes months early, influence the UK market, travel the world, and obtain any shoe I generally want - all this has come from collecting trainers.
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?:
Nope – so many trainers are still eluding my extensive collection, in particular the UNDFTD x Jordan IV's are probably on my most wanted list. Thinking about missing out on this shoe still vexes me to this day, so close but yet so far.
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?:
Nope never, things are just going to get worse I'm afraid. Great for the retailers - bad for consumers and sneakerheads.

Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?
Collecting sneakers is just like any other itemized hobby to me. We put forward a lot of time and energy towards this hobby, just like anyone else would do with their coin collections or baseball card collections. My entire world doesn't revolve around sneakers. I have priorities in life, and collecting sneakers is just a side gig that I truly enjoy doing.
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?
I seriously started collecting over 10 years ago, but I'd probably add a few years to that if you want to count my casual sneaker obsession. I used to stock up heavy on white/white AF1's, and I was also a huge fan of the Reebok Iverson line back then.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?
I'm not really sure how to answer that...I hardly ever use the "sneakerhead" word, but I would consider myself more of a "collector" since I enjoy the thrill of trying to track down rare and elusive shoes. A large portion of my collection consists of shoes that were made for specific players/athletes, so they're all be too big for my small size 9 feet. I don't have a large shoe rotation, but that's because wearing my entire collection was never my goal.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?
Absolutely. I wouldn't say finding older stuff is easer per se, but it's definitely cheaper in todays world. You can find older Dunk ProB's or co.jp AF1's for some great prices right now since everyone's so sprung on Galaxy this and LeBron 7 that. To each their own, but for the original heads still staying true to what they like, now's the time to buy.
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?
Value is always in the eye of the beholder. Hype is always going to be there with these shoes in the future. It might not be abundant like the hype today, but I believe that you'll always be able to find that one buyer who's willing to pay premium even if the hype kinda dies down a bit.
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?
I've owned my Eminem "Encore" Air Jordan IV's for about seven years now...Let's just say that I got them from a Shady X-Mas winner who didn't really know what they had.
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?
Ray Allen XX3 PE in white/green, Deion Sanders Jordan XI PE cleats in nubuck, and Michael Jordan IX game worn PE MCS cleats with the #45 on the back.
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?
My collecting style has seen numerous changes over the last decade. I used to mainly collect Nike Dunks, AF1's, and Jordans. Then I started to focus on collecting only OG Jordans (especially 1985 Jordan I's). Then I branched off into the PE and Sample world. Now I collect a little bit of everything, but I'm definitely more on the picky side when it comes to which shoes I pull the trigger on.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?: I'd rather not say the exact dollar amount. Let's just say that I had to sell a few expensive pairs of shoes quickly to help fund this large purchase. They were my Deion Sanders XI PE's.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?
It wouldn't really bother me as much as one might think. I'd give em the Kanye Shrug and just tell them that I realize everyone's entitled to their own opinion. You think I waste my time buying shoes? Cool story bro. I'll do what I want with my time and money.
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?
Nope. My collection is always evolving. I'm actually going through a remodeling stage right now, where I'm downsizing pretty drastically. I'm selling off random shoes that I can live without. I'm hoping to sell about 100 pairs by the end of this year.
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?
Will it ever die? No. Will it ever die down? Yes. I personally think that our scene is going through a weird stage as I type this. On one side, it seems as if it's growing very rapidly with the popularity of Nike's signature athletes and loud colored hybrid models, but at the same time, I think that more of the older crowd is getting away from this "media whore" sneaker sub-culture. It's really hard for me to imagine what the future holds for sneaker collecting.
Karina

What Is Your Name, How Old Are You, What Do You Do For A Living?:
My name is Karina Benhail aka AirKarinaBx23 , I am 31 years old and I simply love life while working for Jay Corbin at Snkrbst NY!
Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?:
I am actually an avid collector of many different things! Sneakers just happen to be the one I am most passionate about! Something about that smell of rubber at the first opening of that box, the new outfits to put together and knowing I am wearing a legacy of sneakers on my feet. Makes it easier to continue buying them over and over again!
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?:
For over 17 years now!
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?: In my opinion they are one in the same. Yes, some collectors leave things deadstock and never wear them, but some of us collectors also showcase our collections on our feet. Which would make us a "sneakerhead" since that term is usually used to describe an avid wearer of sneakers.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?:
Yes!!!! Finally a chance to get my covetted OGs! Finally a way to keep these "hypebeasts" away from my little corner of the world!
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?:
I sure hope they aren't. Honestly, in my own opinion, those shoes are ridiculous and super ugly. The foamposite used to be a sexy shoe on men and now they have become this colorful disaster. Nike used to be at the helm of classiness on sneakers and now it is as though they have just thrown their hands in the air and gave up. Do not even get me started on the Yeezys. Lord if ever there was a sneaker that was not needed, it is that one.
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?:
Ebay as always, OG Playoff 13s for $20 and My Laney 14s were only $60, the good ole days!
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?:
My '92 Bordeaux 7s, my 2000 Laney 5s and my '99 White/Cement 4s
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?:
My father(rip) was my reason for even knowing who Michael Jordan was and I was used to only getting "normal" sneakers back then in the 80s and 90s. I'd always be stuck with classic reeboks and classic nikes as my father said there was no reason to spend so much on sneakers. In 1997 I was finally allowed to start getting Jordans as long as I brought home straight As. My first pair was Chutney/Black 13s. I still love those to this day!
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?:
$600 for my '92 OG Bordeaux 7s!
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?:
They are welcome to have their opinion but their acceptance is neither desired nor required.
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?:
As long as Jumpman continues making Jordans, it will not be.
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?:
It will never die for me!
Dante Ross

What Is Your Name, How Old Are You, What Do You Do For A Living?:
Dante Ross, triple OG, vice president of A&R, Warner Brothers records.
Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?:
Started as a kid with the Dr. J and One Stars, been hooked ever since.
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?:
35 years, kind of sorta.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?:
I wear my joints, no deadstocking just ice 'em so I can head-crack cats down the line. I wear everything at least once. I am just a dude who loves kicks always have. Not sure if that make me a sneaker head or whatever. I kind of think Bobbito and all the cats in his book "Where'd You Get Those," me included, predate that term "sneakerhead." We could be "the original sneakerheads" maybe. I think Bob called it sneaker culture, so we were ambassadors of sneaker culture before we were sneakerheads, I guess.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?
Yes and no my hardcore days are behind me I cop an occasional pair at flight club like once a year but mostly I just wear skate or running shoes these years.
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?:
Hope not they're fugly to me I'm a grown ass man. They're not even on my radar.
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?:
The chocolate Air Forces ones from Bobbito's book were actually copped for me by Prime Minister Pete Nice [from 3rd Bass]. He called me from a pay phone when he was at Jew Man and was like "D they got these chocolate Airs high top in size 10, I'm an 11.5, you gotta cop." He paid for me, delivered 'em to me, I reimbursed him, and wala, I rocked em. The rest is history! Thanks Pete.
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?:
Green and white low top Airs or the Danny Ainges as we called 'em—I copped em with Bobbito in Spanish Harlem way back when. Chocolate and cream high top Airs for the story attached to 'em and finally the blue high top Supreme Dunks with the stars cause they were flowed to me by Aaron Bondaroff aka Aaron The Don. Every time I wear 'em kids go nuts. All of these shoes have history for me, hence they're my faves.
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?: Basketball! I loved hoops, still do. I wanted the Dr. Js and Clydes as a kid. 'cause of Clyde and Doc. I wanted the Pro Keds 'cause of Pistol Pete, the Ponys 'cause of Bob McAdoo. Adidas Superstars cause of Pistol Pete later on and so on. And when I first saw the NCAA Dunks and the Big Nike aka Terminators and I had my own money it was on. I never looked back. Later when skate shoes, particularly Vans and SBs got fly I kept up. Nowadays I take it easy, mostly skate or running shoes though the LeBrons look tight and I will still kill a pair of Dr. Js or Jordans anytime!
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?:
$350 for burgundy and white Jordan VIs.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?:
They're half right, half clueless. For me it was something me and my brothers Pete Nice, Bobbito, Sake and Emz all did. It was as much of a bonding experience in retrospect as anything. We were all fresh to death and I loved and love being known as a dude with a mean kicks game. That said Bobbito and EMZ hold the crown to me always. Clark Kent is the modern-day champ. I have fond memories of looking for Pro Keds in Walters in Atlanta with Biz Markie way back when at Jack the Rapper, or Bobbito coming up with a secret Air Force 1 find in SF during Gavin convention and all of us copping multiple pairs—it was like he/we had found the holy grail. That to me is what sneaker collecting was about, digging for gems with our boys just like digging for breaks (records). It's weird, I can remember all the great finds when it comes to breaks and kicks. I cant remember my ex gf's names though, go figure.
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?:
I don't think like that. Never did—that's not my goal, never was. I just liked what I liked and if I copped cool, if not all good. Sneakers are to be worn, head cracking cats is the payoff on a mean find. That feeling is priceless.
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?:
Everything dies someday doesn't it? I recently gave away a lot of sneakers when I read Bobbito did it. It was a liberating feeling to give something away to people who need it. Not sure if that answers anything, but for me it said my days are done. I never waited on a line for kicks in my life so maybe my game isn't serious and never was, who knows? For me and the crew I rocked with, I think we all feel like we been there, done that, thanks for the memories, now its the young bucks run at it. We predate the net and eBay more or less, we were analog sneakerheads now its a digital game and I gracefully bowed out a few years ago. Thanks for the memories!
DJ Senatore

What Is Your Name, How Old Are You, What Do You Do For A Living?:
DJ Senatore, 30 years old. I Co-Own Rare Breed Footwear in Red Bank, NJ.
Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?:
I always had different sneakers growing up, as a kid I remember wearing Black Suede V's, Grape V's, Columbia XI's, Pumps, and even some L.A. Gears. As I got older, and started high school I just started buying shoes, wearing most of them but as you get more and more there starts to become pairs you dont want to wear or can't bring yourself to wear. And thats where the collecting begins. Those shoes you had as a kid start to retro and its nostalgic, at least thats what it is for me. Brings me back to that time when my mom and brother came back from the mall and she just bought him the new Columbia XI's and I wanted them. We ran right back out and she bought them for me as well.
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?: I have been collecting shoes since 1997 right when I started high school. Started out with all Jordans, some other Nikes and some SB's. Started collecting Reebok Pumps around 2001, but at the time it was just a few Omni Lites they were re-releasing. Sold all Nike and Jordan stuff around 2009, about 200 pairs and just went hard with Reebok.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?: Its tough to really make a distinction, they are both into the shoes. For me, I dont wear what I collect. Of course I wear my Reeboks, but If its something I really like I get a pair to wear and then one to keep for the collection. A sneakerhead is someone who is immersed in the whole sneaker culture, reading the blogs, going to shows, waiting on that next release.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?:
I dont think so, for me its the opposite. I used to be able to pick up OG Reebok Pumps for cheap. Anywhere from $50-$100, now Its getting more difficult. I just lost an auction last week for an OG SXT that went from $60 and ended at $375 all in the last minute. I am still able to score a few great deals here and there, but its much more difficult.
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?:
I do still feel that they will be valuable because there is always a new breed of collector, so that kid who wasnt old enough to get that pair when they released grows up, gets a job and now has the money to go out and grab that pair he couldnt get a few years back. But at the same time, with all these companies retroing the same shoes over and over again the market becomes saturated and that older retro does not bring the same money the most recent one does.
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?: During the Reebok Pump 20 stuff they made 20 pairs of a Heineken Reebok Pump Omni that were only given out to the Heineken reps in Canada. After that the mold for the shoe was destroyed, I tried to find a pair for a year or so with no luck. One day a pair pops up on ebay for around $3000, it took me a good 3 months and I finally got the seller down to $1000.
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?:
Heineken Omni Lites, Alife Pump 20 (never released), and I have 3 1 of 1 Reebok Pump Bringbacks that were made for me.
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?:
Saw a few color ways of Pumps in Feet First and Foot Locker, picked them up and I just caught the bug. Started looking for more and more, decided no one was collecting Reebok Pumps and everyone was doing the Nike and Jordan thing so thought I would do something different.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?:
Paid $1000 for the Heineken Pumps, and probably paid around $1000-1200 for a pair of the OG green Alife Ballouts. At the time they were going for crazy money, I also at one time had 6 pairs of those.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?:
I'm sure we have all heard that, but I find that those people are the most intrigued when you show them everything you have. I say to each his own, everyone has something they are in to whether its cars, or memorabilia, etc. I think now a days everyone has something that makes them tick, for us it just happens to be shoes.
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?:
No, I dont think it will ever be complete. I have a ton of OG's, Samples, etc and still every week I come across something I don't have or haven't seen. That's what keeps bringing us back, the idea that there is still something out there that we have not seen yet.
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?:
Definitely not, there will always be people out there who collect shoes. The crazy may die down at some point but there are too many of us out there for it to completely go away.

Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?
I was a only child so...since I can remember I have always had a lot of shoes. But in 98-99 it turned into something different. I just have always loved sneakers.
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?
I would say 14ish years...
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?
Some stuff does fall through the cracks and you can steal them.. But when something I really WANT pops up it seems like I am not the only one looking.. Also with my common size (10-10.5) prices always are a tad higher.
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?
I would think they always hold a good value. Also who knows what Nike will retro in the next years. So I am sure people will settle for the cheapest way to get them.
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?
Don't have the OG pair anymore but I did once traded a pair of JT racing gloves and a Vision hipsack for a pair of Fire Red V Jordans pretty much brand new in 1990!!
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?
Mini swoosh 99 grey Air Force, Jordan IV black and red from '99 wearable and a tie between Blackbeard and Nazar 1500 New Balance.
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?
I was into pretty much Jordans and SB for my 20s but now I am in my mid 30s and have went away from new released Jordans (in most cases unless its a model I like) and moved to runners. And mostly AM1 and New Balance because of comfort.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?
I have the Mags. And I won them from eBay on the 5th day. Besides that it would have to be a G on the Parra/Patta cherrywood Air Max 1.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?
It's my 401k.
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?
Probably not. Some sneakers are just too hard to find
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?
I would say no.

Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?
Collecting has always been a part of my life. It started with marbles and has tremendously branched out to sports items such as cards, toy figures, posters, jerseys, memorabilia & ultimately sneakers. I blame Nike & Michael Jordan.
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?
About 18 years. I've always had an affinity with sneakers. I paid closer attention from a collector's standpoint when Michael Jordan broke out the Air Jordan Concord XI in the 1995 playoffs against the Orlando Magic.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?
To me, anybody can become a collector but it takes true skill & knowledge to be labeled as a sneakerhead. If you're truly passionate about learning how shoes are made, the inspiration cues and performance aspects of a shoe, then you're a sneakerhead in my book.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?: As time passes by, the older stuff may or may not be available or they have decreased in value if you look at it from a monetary standpoint. There are things to consider when retros come into play. People either love them or hate them. If you're into collecting the older stuff, age, rarity and availability, always play significant parts. However, there has been an influx of restorers that have come through among the sneaker community these days so shoes that end up crumbling can now be brought back to life with midsole swaps and deep cleaning.
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?
Perhaps. Every shoe is definitely unique and I would actually look at it from an era standpoint. Compare it to basketball when you had the passing of the torch in the 1998 NBA All Star game from Michael to Kobe. You also had a bunch of older generation players in a melting pot with newer generation players ready to take over. As time passes by, people will begin to reflect on how a shoe like the Galaxy Foamposite has changed the way sneakers are released today.
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?: A lot of my stuff has been through pickups in store or online but a lot of it has been based on luck. My favorite story is of the Air Jordan Titanium XX3 release. I've detailed that on my YouTube channel.
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?
1. Air Jordan Concord XI 2. Air Jordan Titanium XX3 3. Air Jordan White Cement III
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?
As stated, it started out with marbles. Since there were so many types out there and my interest with basketball as a teenager growing up in the 90's began to take off, that went to the back burner. With cards, there were now "sets" of items to collect and the goals were to complete these sets. When sneakers came into play, colorways of a shoe like the numbered Air Jordan series were goals I set to complete. Over the years, more colorways and styles of the shoes were releasing and it was just very hard to complete any sets. Plus I was still a student and money was definitely hard to save back then. I've focused and limited my collecting style to original colorways that released in a particular year.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?
Do I want to say? I will say that I dropped a pretty penny for the Air Jordan Titanium XX3 from a reseller several months after its release. See the YouTube vid!
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?
Find a new hobby. If you've ever attempted to search for a sneaker whether it be a present or past release, everyone knows that patience is a BIG part of this game. If you don't have patience, keep moving.
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?
It depends on style. At the present moment I can say my collection isn't complete. There are still about 5-6 more colorways and models that I'm looking for in my size (10-10.5) in brand new condition with box, paper and accessories...OG Aqua 8, Air Jordan 17 Lows (Carolina Blue colorway & All Star colorway), Air Jordan Cherrywood 16 and this one is far reaching but an OG White/Red or OG Black/Red Air Jordan 1. I'd probably have to bust out the credit card if any of these are out there.
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?
I don't think so. People are always looking for things and trade shows, consignment shops and private sellers are ways in which you can obtain past releases.

Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?
I've got a bit of OCD so collecting/organizing is just part of that. As far as shoes I was hooked when friends and I would watch MJ play. I remember us all saying "I've got to have those IVs."
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?
14-15 years.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?
I'm a collector. That's all I know really.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?
Absolutely, I quietly pick up old Air Max stuff like an overweight ninja.
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?
A shoe is only worth what someone will pay for it. It's hard to tell where this hobby will be in 10 years.
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?
Nothing crazy. Just "right place/right time" kind of thing.
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?
Lebron IV Fruity Pebble, Nike Airmax 93 white/blue/light green, and the Puma Suede MC Shan.
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?
My collection is kind of all over the place. I started with Jordan's but I have a little of everything.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?
Around $1,000. It was a few different pairs.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?
I would just share my experience. If they get it great. If not on to the next. I've been fortunate enough to meet some really great people through this hobby.
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?
My wife prays daily that it will. Probably not though. She's a hater. Lol.
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?
I don't think so. There are enough people that are into it for the right reasons.
Alfonso Ayala

My name is Alfonso Ayala, I am 24 years old. I am a freelance stylist currently working sales for French Fashion House Lanvin.
Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?:
I have to thank my father for influencing me on collecting sneakers. I grew up watching him collect money; he was very meticulous with the collection of bills and coins from all over the world. As a child he would buy me an assortment of chucks, colors ranging from orange to blue. He must have bought me every color that existed. The purchase became more about the color I did not have than the purchase of the shoe itself.
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?:
I have dedicated myself to collecting adidas for 8 years.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?:
In my experience a collector holds onto their collection where a sneakerhead might flip or trade a pair of sneakers. For a collector it is about the quality not quantity. As a collector I put effort into finding a sneaker; I refuse to stand in a line. The approach to sneakers is totally different; I don't care if I never wear a pair of my sneakers, in fact 65% of them are not my size.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?: Absolutely, I love avoiding the release day drama and strolling into a random sneaker shop and take my time to decide what sneaker I can add to my collection. As long as cats stay on the new stuff I can focus on all the sneakers I either skipped or didn't get a chance to buy. Collecting is all about the hunt.
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?:
No, these releases are a kneejerk reaction to the hype and money made of the pervious release. I feel the company is just riding the "Foam wave" till they figure out which one to catch next. Those hype releases are just that, a hyped release no real substance and no longevity. I don't think I've heard much about the Galaxy Foams after the next foam came out, where as a classic 35th anniversary Superstar is always going to be a part of another milestone in adidas history.
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?:
I found very rare 1954 adidas soccer boot at a mainstream 2nd-hand store in Dallas for $30.
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?:
My number one would be my 2009 adidas Diamond Pack Superstar 80s. The second would be the Consortium Micropacers with the original German patent document printed all over it. Last but not least would be the 2007 Consortium Metro Attitudes from the "hidden message pack".
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?:
I played soccer growing up; adidas was a brand that was consistently present during practice, a challenging game or a win. Not to mention my love for hiphop; the three stripes quickly became a symbol for what moved me. I went from wearing my cleats on the field to a pair of white with black stripped superstars with fat colored laces on the streets.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?:
The most I've paid for a pair of adidas was $700 for my diamond pack superstars however I have recently begun collecting designer sneakers and I have spent well over $1000 on those.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?:
I would say attempting to impose your opinion on others is the real waste of time.
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?:
No I will always find a way to grow my collection.
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?:
For those of us who collect out of passion it will never die, the thrill of adding to my collection will keep me doing it for many years.
Nick Engvall

What Is Your Name, How Old Are You, What Do You Do For A Living?:
Nick Engvall, I go by Nick and sometimes people cal me Nick. I'm 34. I manage to avoid wearing button ups and wear sneakers for a living.
Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?:
Passion. I wanted to draw them as a kid. It was a passion I shared with my brothers and eventually it grew into an unhealthy obsession that I shared with friends.
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?:
Does collecting pictures out of an Eastbay catalog count? I got my first brand name sneakers, a pair of adidas when– I'm drawing a blank, 8-10 years old? Pretty sure they're still my mom still has them. I also have my first pair of sneakers ever still...somewhere. First pair i bought with my own money was when I was 15, Nike Air Lamaste. If you got a pair in a 13, holler.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?:
I don't think there is a difference. I think that people feel the need to categorize and put labels on every person and/or group. To me, they both have a passion for sneakers. To try and say you're not one or the other, seems like insecurity. If you have a passion for sneakers, I can appreciate that. You can call me a sneakerhead, sneakerholic, collector, sneaker nut, whatever, I'm still the same person. I love sneakers, no matter what label you prefer, I'm good.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?: I don't think it's just older stuff. I think there is an opportunity to get anything you want now if you're willing to put in the legwork to get it. It's a great time for sneakers. You can even get a job in the industry, when i was younger, the only thing you could do was get made fun of for being obsessed with them.
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?:
The value will always be there to the right people. I don't have any emotional attachment to Galaxy Foams, so they're not for me. To the guy that camped out with his friends to get a pair, those memories are priceless and I can see them wanting to revisit them down the road by re-purchasing those shoes.
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?:
I'm honestly so blessed with the friends I've met through this crazy passion for sneakers, it's hard to say. This story is probably the best. I was living in Austin, Texas and couldn't get a pair of House of Pain adidas that were dropping at Concepts in Boston. I was actually considering flying there for the release, but was promised a pair by someone so I didn't go. They didn't come through. Someone from adidas had started their own Twitter account to try and sell more shoes by locating them for customers, this was back before Twitter was filled with sneakerheads. He saw that i didn't get a pair and was searching, hunted a pair down in my size and had them shipped to me in Texas. Amazing. Still amazing to this day.
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?: I'd only need one. If i had to take three, it'd be Chucks, Reebok Questions and Jordan 3s...or some Superstar 80s. Depends on the day.
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?:
I collect all sneakers. If you looked in my storage unit you would find a lot of everything. Allen Iverson Reeboks, player exclusive adidas, lots of Saucony and New Balance runners, a ton of Vans and other skate shoes. There's really no rhyme or reason to what I collect, it changes from season to season. Aside from the usual suspects previously mentioned, I've been scooping a lot of new technical runners lately. So, I can't really answer that question, other than to say it's just one of passions in life.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?:
$250 on the Packer x Reebok Questions. I've come close to that on a few other purchases as well.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?:
I'd say, "You don't understand what having a passion is. I have more great friends from this waste of time than people can dream of. That's not a waste to me."
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?:
Never, there will stuff that comes and goes but I will always find things to add.
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?:
Trying to be cool never goes out of fashion in a world full of insecurity.
Chad

What Is Your Name, How Old Are You, What Do You Do For A Living?:
Chad Jones aka Sneaker Galactus, 34 yrs young, I'm Director of Operations of a nationwide Internet Service Provider and Telecommunications Company.
Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?:
Good question. When I started I was looked at like some weirdo lol. As a kid I was only allowed to wear white sneakers. As soon as they got dirty, I got a new pair. As time went on it became an expectation to always have a fresh pair of kicks. I never thought about it being called "collecting" because it wasn't considered a collectible item. Why sneakers? Well I definitely have an OCD. At first it was Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars, transformers, go bots, gi joe, visionaries, etc. Then moved on to baseball cards, garbage pail kids, and Comic books many of which I also still have today. All of these, with an overemphasis on sneakers are part of who I am. Each sneaker represents a particular time in my life. Some great memories and some are not so pleasant but altogether paint a picture of who I am and what I have been through. Just looking at certain pairs help to keep me grounded as an individual.
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?:
I have been into sneakers since the early 80s. Collecting them started about 1989. That gives me about 24 years give or take.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?:
I don't believe there is much of a difference honestly. Whether or not you choose to admit it, certain instances make us all sneakerheads, hypebeasts, collectors, resellers, etc. More times then I care to remember I would label myself a hypebeast! In society a collector is viewed as someone who is deeply knowledgeable and very specific about the items that are being collected. People who are perfecting their craft to add specific pieces that speak to them or their life experiences. I never liked the connotation that the label sneakerhead gets from the mainstream world. A sneakerhead is viewed as someone who has sneakers on their mind with almost every processed thought. A mindless zombie who eats anything that is sent their way in the realm of sneakers. Nothing else matters. Since everyone is buying new releases right now, do you feel like there is more opportunity to collect older stuff? Older stuff is great as long as it is wearable. I don't think that I am you're typical collector. My whole reason for hunting down pairs is that I want to stunt in them! It might just be to the laundromat, but #stillfresh lol. The opportunity for older pairs will always be there now that folks have understood the kind of money some of these sneakers command in the public marketplace.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?:

Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?:
A shoe like the galaxy foamposite will always be valuable yrs from now. Why? Bottom line it is a dope shoe. Discount the hype/ limited numbers, this shoe would still have sold out. It was really cool to see Nike come with a fresh new take on a classic model. The timing was perfect. The theme even better.
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?:
I have come across some really cool pairs in my life and later thought about it like "how'd that just happen" but the most unbelievable way has to be how I came to acquire a pair of Shox R4 runners. This time might have been traumatic to many people. Flash back to 9/11 and I found myself in my car on the Brooklyn Bridge watching the second plane hit the Twin Towers. The US was under terrorist attack via commercial air plane and I realised my Mother was in flight from Belgium and scheduled to arrive at JFK in the late morning/ early afternoon. All I could think of was that she might be on one of these flights and I might never get the chance to see her again. Luckily once all of the dreadful events that took place, I got a call from the Red Cross about my Mom. Her flight was diverted to St. John's Newfoundland because no intl flights were allowed in US airspace. During all of this she became ill and had to be hospitalized. She also refused to get back on any plane after her traumatic experience. I elected to go to her and pick her up. Little did I know that I had to get to the furthest eastern point in all of North America! I grabbed my little sister, got in the whip, floored it and topped out at a cool 130 mph most of the way there. Why? With the kind of luck I was having, I had to beat a hurricane that was coming to St John's! Anyway after getting there just to see the look on my Moms face when she saw us again made it all worth it. Once she was feeling a bit better, she took us shopping at a Sporting Goods store. If I remember right the store was called Sportchek. She let me scoop a pair of these crazy colorway of the R4s that I had never seen before! To this day anytime I look at that shoe, it brings me back to a time of supreme family bonding and considering that she passed unexpectedly only 5 yrs later, I hope I never forget this story and always have this sneaker in my possession.
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?:
As a person with a real OCD I don't believe that I am able to narrow it down to three. Together they are me....
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?:
I don't have a particular style of sneaker that I collect. I think I have a reasonably diverse collection, although most people know me for collecting Rare samples and Player Exclusives. Basketball, Hip Hop, NYC, my family and sports in general all heavily influence what I buy.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?:
I'm almost embarrassed to say - 2700 and stupid me pulled the trigger twice at that price! What was it? A home and Away pair of Chris Paul Jordan XXIII Player Exclusives
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?:
I would say that if it is something you truly have a passion for, it could never be a waste of time! I also might tell that person that I think their whole life was a waste of time, but for some reason your still alive so let me be!
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?:
Probably not lol. There are always cool things that pop up
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?:
I think it may die down or lessen in popularity. However, someone will always need a new pair of kicks, whether, it be for fashion, function or mantle piece lol
Khalli Vegas

What Is Your Name, How Old Are You, What Do You Do For A Living?:
Khalli Vegas, age 46, profession College Professor (Project Management)
Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?:
I probably have a different take then most in the sense I don't see it as a collection because I have always purchase with the intent to wear that sneaker not DS, Showcase or anything. I think sneakers best represent the inner kid in most of us you name a great experience occurring in my life and most times I can tell you the sneaker connected to the experience.
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?:
I purchase my first shoe 1984 and the passion has yet to die out and once you keep more shoes than days in the week it in some sense becomes unwittingly a collection of sorts since 1984.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?:
I am not certain if I can distinguish a difference in the two but would imagine most who collect or buy a ton of sneakers at some level could be consider a sneakerhead.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?:
Well the game has changed a little in that regards gone are the mom & pop sneaker shops now a days replaced by Ebay and various online auctions sites. There is also a few consignment type shops that have a lot of vintage gems such as Suplex Philadelphia have a lot of older gems from my youth.
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?:
I think value can be define as what someone is willing to pay but my guess is that things will level out eventually as a lot of folks find new interest or cheaper alternatives to place their money other than high price sneakers.
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?:
At an estate sale with a friend who was there to buy from an art collection, found out the guy was a retired tennis pro and the sole bidder on a lot of vintage unworn tennis shoes Borg Diadoras, Ellesse, Fila from the 80's mint condition I was ecstatic especially since the lot coast less than $300 bucks for multi pairs.
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?:
1. Adidas Ivan Lendl Competition 1985, 2. Diadora Borg Elite 1981 3. New Balance "blue steel" 1985
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?:
A lot of my sneakers were influenced early on by watching Wide World of Sports tennis matches Borg, McEnroe, Ashe etc. (Fila, Le Coq Sportif, Ellesse, etc) The mid 80's ushered in drug culture shape a lot of sneaker choices back then since didn't have blogs, magazines, or social media they usually were the first cats to buy them and bring back to the hood to stunt.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?:
Gucci High 1984 $175-$200 which was an outrageous price back then but most of the time I try to be sensible $110 or less since afterall they are sneakers and I am going to wear them not bronze them.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?:
I can see both sides to that argument on the one hand reselling has become the new drug dealing and folks are able to profit more off the hype than quality of shoe so if you can double your money why wouldn't you continue to collect with purpose of profit. On the other hand there will always be those who truly have a passion for sneakers and like me age becomes irrelevant you continue to purchase on some levels keeps you young.
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?:
Yes and NO, there will always be those elusive sneakers from my heyday that may never resurface such as the Bally Competition and then they are lines that are enjoying a resurgence such as Ewing Athletics keeps me added additional pairs. On the other hand sneakers take up 50% of my space but less than 5% of my life so have transition into more comfortable footwear running shoes and lo top tennis shoes vs. Hi Top Basketball shoes.
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?:
Not in the foreseeable future with so many magazines, blogs and social media devoted to the culture there is a much younger generation that you see at various sneaker events now and my God kids who just turn 12 know the calendar year for every sneaker release and have amassed a sizable collection in relatively three years.
Russ Bengtson

What Is Your Name, How Old Are You, What Do You Do For A Living?:
Russ Bengtson, 42, sneaker editor of Complex and co-host of Quickstrike with my man DJ Clark Kent.
Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?:
I was probably born a collector. Did stamps, did baseball cards, did Matchbox cars and Hot Wheels. Maybe it's hereditary or something. Sneakers were just something else I got into-and stayed into.
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?:
I've been into sneakers since before I got my first pair of Nikes (Bruins, in fourth grade), but didn't acquire anything I'd consider a "collection" shoe until the first Jordan retros in '94 when I was fresh out of college.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?:
Being a sneakerhead is more superficial to me. If you're a legit sneaker collector, your interests go way deeper than just collecting Instagram likes or trying to break necks at the latest release.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?:
Absolutely 100 percent. While prices for relatively recent releases (Yeezy 2s, LeBron MVPs, etc.) skyrocket with the vagaries of demand, you can scoop deadstock '80s Nikes and adidas on eBay all day long for under '80s retail. You just need to know what you're looking for-and how to look for it.
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?:
Yeah, for sure. Limited releases will always be valuable. Although as the market gets flooded with limited release after limited release, the collective value will drop. Not to mention hardly anyone will wear a sneaker that they see as an "investment." It's harder to find a pair of original deadstock Air Revolutions than it is to find a deadstock pair of Galaxy Foams.
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?:
Pure dumb luck, walking into sporting goods stores that had massive amounts of deadstock from the late '80s and early '90s. I got a pair of Command Force that way, as well as my Air Flight '89 highs. Those came from a shop in Virginia that seemed to be frozen in 1989. I wish I'd rented a truck and bought them out.
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?: White/royal Air Flight 89 highs, white/royal Air Revolutions, white/purple Air Force IIs, all deadstock, all original.
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?:
The late '80s were formative for me as a sneaker fan, and it happened to coincide with Nike's best output of the pre-signature (non-Jordan) era. I only got one new pair a year back then, and it was usually a takedown model, so I've been making up for those old misses.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?:
I've been fairly lucky-or frugal-on eBay, and haven't had to spend more than a couple hundred bucks on anything. I have early game-worn shoes from Dominique Wilkins and Charles Barkley that were farily pricey, but nowhere near what they'd go for now. The early days of eBay were great for me.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?:
Do you.
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?:
Absolutely not. The whole concept of a sneaker "grail" is an illusion. Because once you find one, another takes its place. Which is fine, because the joy is in the hunt.
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?:
Not as long as people have a passion for sneakers and a willingness to do what it takes to get the ones they love.
James Else

What Is Your Name, How Old Are You, What Do You Do For A Living?:
I am James Else but most call/know me as Elsey, I am a digital content and social media manager for UDOX
Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?:
My parents tell me even as a child I had a thing for nice kicks, I always had to have the nicest ones so I guess it was always "in me" in some way from an early age. However from my memory it all started in the late 80's early 90's when we started holidaying to the United States and the shoe that really sparked the fire was the Reebok Pump! Used to come back to the UK with them and rock them in the playground at school and get mobbed "what are they" "where did you get those" It was almost my favourite part of the holiday coming home with new sneakers that other kids won't have ever seen.
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?:
Numbers started to swell about 12/13 years ago. I think with most people it begins when you finally start earning your own money and have this disposable income all if a sudden and you no longer need the "bank of Mum and Dad" to get the pairs you want.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?:
For me it's like this. If you had two buildings next to eachother one was a Sneaker Museum and the other was a Sneaker Store the collector would hit the Museum and the Sneakerhead would hit the Store. But I don't think it's a black and white thing there is a lot of grey (as with everything). I wouldn't call myself a collector, right enough I have a healthy collection but I see it as I just like sneakers a lot! but ask someone else and they would say I'm a collector. I think a collector goes that bit deeper with their shoes and their knowledge.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?: I honestly don't think there is. I'm probably not the best person to ask as I only go into the vintage market on very rare occasions. I appreciate the old as much as anyone but I like new things. If I had to say I would say there's less opportunity, the market is so much bigger these days and while a majority are thirsty for new releases there are still guys coming into the vintage market meaning more eyes on ever decreasing numbers of vintage.
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?: Yea no doubt, there will still be a healthy value on the super hyped stuff like that couldn't tell you if it would be more or less than now I sure would like to haha. The legacy lives on through the community stuff like that becomes like folklore almost and that helps to carry the legend and ultimately the associated value. Google "galaxy foams" in year 20-long after we're gone and it will always tell you that a dude once offered his car in exchange for a pair.
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?:
I've told this story a million times but it is a story that will never get topped and I'm lucky enough to have some awesome sneakers and awesome stories to go with them. However the circumstances behind how I came to have a pair of adidas 35th Top Secrets in the collection still has me shaking in disbelief and people in the London scene saying "remember the time" to this day! I was at the Launch party for the Sneaker book by Unorthodox Styles, "Sneakers: The Complete Collectors Guide" in London, the place was packed full of London's finest Sneakerheads and I was a relative newcomer to these sort of events (I was there through association with the Crooked Tongues forum) meeting many people from the forum in real life for the first time, that is cringe worthy to write down lol At the end of the night Russell the main man at UDOX decided to do a giveaway and brought in one of his F&F pairs of Top Secrets and decided he was going to give them away there and then. The way he decided to do this was to read out his mobile number over the mic and the first person to get through would win the shoe. The rest is history! it was surreal seeing everyone around me moan at going straight to voicemail and then hearing my phone ringing and Russell answering! mental!
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?: What an awful question, would you choose a favourite child? This answer could change on daily basis. Air Storm Beacons it's my favourite model. Air Max 90 BRS Powerwall Air Max 1 iD The first studio iD I had the chance to do and I love it.
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?:
As mentioned previously it started when I had my own money to spend on sneakers. 2 pairs became 4, 4 turned into 10 and here I am 12 years later at 300+. I don't tend to stick to one thing, I'm very colour driven a lot of the time rather than style. I would say I'm an Air Max man if I had to pick one style. My collection is dominated by the Swoosh probably 75% admittedly a Nike head but I have a good spread of brands in the crate, I'm very much "a good shoe is a good shoe" doesn't matter what brand it is, you won't get any sneaker snobbery from me.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?:
I recent pick up just took this honour actually it was £300 for a pair of Kid Robots but a few weeks ago I had the chance to get hold of some Foot Patrol Epics for £400 I couldn't turn it down, dead stock and with all the trimmings, box artwork, original receipt everything.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?:
First and foremost nothing is a waste of time if you are truly passionate about it and it's something you get enjoyment from. Doesn't matter if it's stamps, coke cans, beer bottles, baseball cards, sneakers if you love it don't let anyone tell you it's a waste of time. I have a group of friends (8 of us) that I talk to on email every single day and have done for the last 8 years or so. We met through the Crooked Tongues forum and we have become very close friends, life friends as a result. This was all possible because of one thing, we had a common interest in sneakers. I have met many incredible people, made some awesome friends and contacts, attended amazing events and even have a living thanks to collecting sneakers, I don't think anyone could tell me that it's a waste of time.
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?:
Never! there is always room for another pair.
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?:
Personally I cant' see it, 5 years ago everyone was saying "wait for the bubble to burst" It's not going to happen its so mainstream now I think it's here to stay for the foreseeable future.
Arnaud 'Mykicks' Mele

What Is Your Name, How Old Are You, What Do You Do For A Living?:
My name is Arnaud 'Mykicks' Mele, I'm 29 and I'm a military officer in the Belgian army.
Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?:
I played b-ball for 14 years, 10 years for a provincial team and 4 in the military university team. I also have passion for the hip-hop culture. Sneakers are the best of both worlds and my collection bring me back some good memories of my golden era :)
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?:
I bought my first pair when I get my first check so when I was 18, 11 years ago...and then I could never stop with buying sneakers, it was immediately an addiction.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?:
I think a sneakerhead lives for his passion, he's always thinking about his next purchase or his matching outfits, he rocks his kicks and enjoy sharing his addiction, he buys what he likes whatever the brand...a collector, according to me, is focused on a few models, he likes beautiful displays and loves the story behind the shoes...a collector can be a sneakerhead & vice-versa.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?:
There are two kinds of buyers : the old ones who know the dream team era and are in love with most of the 85-07 bball models and the lil bro who follow the hype and discovered jordan brand in 2011...the old buyers know the value of their old stuff so they're selling for big money...if they ever decide to sell, they can say 'dont buy the new retro shit but buy mines made with top quality materials for 200 more'...and they are right. Problem is the fact lil bro focus on design and dont really care about quality...i personaly got most of the older stuff i wanted as a collector and keep buying new release as a sneakerhead.
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?:
I dont think they will go higher and higher in value. Trends are always changing and even if they are more valuable after 5-7 years on the market they also become more and more fragile so when the first cracks appear u know you have lost half of the value. I really think jordan models will go down in value and lebrons will take a good part of the sneakers market...customers need someone they can admire and they want to wear his shoes...jordan is the greatest player of all times but he's nobody for our lil bro, they didn't see him on playgrounds and they are the future collectors...
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?: In 2011 i made a city trip to New York with my wife, the day before my departure i sent a message to all Air Mags sellers on eBay asking a possible meet up in my hotel the next day. Someone gave me an answer and accepted my offer so i met him with the shoes in my hotel on Times Square and i paid in cash...not bad for a lil Belgian guy.
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?:
AJ IV Undefeated, AJ IV blk Oregon and AM1 Albert Heijn for their story, cw and rarity.
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?:
I started collecting with buying a fake AJ1 retro black pattern on eBay...yeah i was a newbie and didn't know anything about a legit check lol.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?:
I dont like to talk about money but I spent some cash for my IV motorsports because they were DS in my size and i already owned the EMs and the Undftds so I needed to have my trio complete.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?:
I would say he's right. I personnaly think I spend too much time online in order to find some good deals or to get the last sneaker news...but I can't stop, I'm addicted lol.
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?:
I will say 'my collection is complete' when I can't afford anymore to buy kicks...but if I still have funds for my passion, there will be always something nice to cop.
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?:
There are more and more collectors but I think they are more focused on hype and quantity than on story and quality... real collectors with knowledges go down and down.
Mike aka FeetHeat

What Is Your Name, How Old Are You, What Do You Do For A Living?:
My Name is Mike aka @feetheat, Im 28, and I'm a part owner of the premier sneaker boutique in Philadelphia, PA, "SUPLEX" 624 South Street Phila, PA, 19147 www.suplexphiladelphia.com @suplexphiladelphia
Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?:
I've always had an eye for "cool" sneakers. Didn't grow up with a TON of pairs, but always had something nice. YEARS ago, me and a few old friends picked a few of our favorite silhouettes to focus on and it just progressed from there. As soon as I had a job and some money of my own, I started "collecting".
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?:
I use the term "collecting" lightly, but I've been buying (and wearing) sneakers obsessively for the last decade or so.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?:
I think a "collector" is more defined in what they buy/like/wear, and has a some knowledge or a story for almost every pair, while a "sneakerhead" is usually just buying what's new or popular and it's almost always self proclaimed. You don't call yourself a "sneakerhead", others should just refer to you that way. Haha. There's always a few expceptions though.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?:
YES. Matter of fact, I've been recently been focusing on trying to grab up all the stuff I missed from the last few years, more than I've been looking for new releases. But only certain older releases. Half of the kicks I passed on or missed are double or triple what they were a year or two ago. Looks like they'll remain out of reach.
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?:
I think certain pairs will hold their value, Mags, Galaxy & Paranorman Foams, Yeezys, BINs, ect, ect, but they all have to plateau at some point I think. I don't ever want to see sneakers reach car prices....
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?: A few years ago, I was bidding (excitedly) on a pair of 1989 Nike Air Liners. Things were going good, until I was sniped out in the last 2-3 seconds.....I was devastated....In a last ditch effort to feel better about the loss, I launched a twitter assault, full of choice expletives (LoL) aimed at whoever sniped me for the Air Liners, and prayed they'd see it. A few days prior, I had the opportunity to link up with the Sneaker Legend, Mr. Khalli Vegas, and sure enough, shortly after that tweet went out, I got a text. It was the man himself, Khalli, and he was the Air Liner sniper!!! To top it off, this guy refused to keep the shoes, and sent them out to me as soon as they arrived to this house (he had pairs in storage too)! Talk about a long shot and a good deed! Thank you again Khalli!
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?: Air Max 90s are my all time favorite sneaker silhouette. And my favorite pair of them are the "Concords" (preferably the HOA release). Number two is the New Balance 1300CL and third would be the 2004 Adidas ZX500 Suede Navy/Bone.
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?:
I just always gravitated towards running sneakers, but I do love certain Hi tops, mostly dunks and AJ 1s. In third grade, I joined the track team, JUST to get some new sneakers. White/Black/Orange Asics, can't remember the model though. Maybe that was the beginning of my love for runners.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?:
Most I can remember putting into one pair of sneakers, was a seven pair trade for the Patta/Parra Air Max Ones, from their 5th anniversary release.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?:
I'd tell them their Beanie Baby collection is wack...LoL
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?:
No, there will always be something I need or want. I love how it always changes too. I may need something next year, that I didn't want, when it released two years prior.
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?:
I don't think it will. When this current wave of "sneakerheads" is over it all, the few true heads will remain, and they'll be in it HEAVILY, when the wave hits again.....and so on, and so on.
Jeff Staple

What Is Your Name, How Old Are You, What Do You Do For A Living?:
jeffstaple, since 1975, founder and creative director of Staple Design, Staple Pigeon and Reed Space.
Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?:
I collect because as a designer, it's really the only way to understand the nuances in something. If you want to be a great emcee, you need to study all the rappers in history. And if you want to be in the footwear, you need to do the same. Sneakers are a great equalizer for all people-regardless of economic background or social status.
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?:
Since the 6th grade.
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?:
You can be a sneakerhead and own one pair of shoes. A collector, by definition, is an organized hoarder. Haha.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?:
I'm not sure...but I do know one thing. i've been trying to buy up Nike Pigeon x Staple SB Dunks and I'm having the hardest damn time! Who's selling! Reach out! (@jeffstaple)
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?:
If by "value" you mean above regular MSRP, then yes.
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?:
In this world it's crazy... I might simply "like" a photo of a shoe on Instagram...one of hundreds or thousands of people who also like the photo, then all of a sudden, I get an email asking "Do you want this shoe??" That shit is crazy to me. I don't take that lightly. I feel extremely blessed.
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?:
Presto. Innovation + comfort. Woven. Innovation + comfort. Jordan 3. Nostalgia + uncomfort.
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?:
The Jordan 3 spawned it for me in the 6th Grade. That shoe made a huge impact on me back then.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?:
I've never paid after-market prices for a shoe. I guess it would be regular MSRP for Visvims or Lanvins. So, $300-500.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?:
"Is that so?"
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?:
Never. For sure.
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?:
Never. For sure.
DJ Clark Kent

What Is Your Name, How Old Are You, What Do You Do For A Living?:
DJ Clark Kent, doesn't matter, DJ and record producer and...um... Oh yeah... host of Complex TV's Quickstrike (season 2 coming soon!!)
Why Collecting? Why Sneakers?:
I don't collect, I cop (heavily) and wear. Why sneakers? They are the beginning of every fresh outfit.. Period
How Long Have You Been Collecting Sneakers?:
I don't collect.. Been getting fresh since 1975.. (Damn..)
What Is The Difference Between A Collector And A Sneakerhead?:
I don't know? I don't collect. I just like sneakers. Clean sneakers. Brand-new sneakers.
Since Everyone Is Buying New Releases Right Now, Do You Feel Like There Is More Opportunity To Collect Older Stuff?:
If you collect? Absolutely!
Do You Think Hyped Releases From Today Like A Galaxy Foamposite Will Be Valuable Years From Now?:
Yes.. The Internet will continue to provide information to the masses. This will give a new "collector" the ability to find out about a Galaxy, see the craziness that happened, and get hyped to find one! Same thing that happens with a 13-year-old kid who has no idea who Michael Jordan is, but wants "OG" Jordan's with the "Nike Air" in the back. (The kick game is becoming a circus.)
What's The Most Unbelievable Way You've Come Across A Pair In Your Collection?:
A friend from Japan told me about some Tan & Pink Air Force 1's that were about to release. I was arriving in Japan, the week after the release. I called the promoter, asked him to change my flight, so I could arrive a week early. Landed, copped 11 pair, and had to pay for 6 days in a hotel, doing nothing. But, I had these amazing shoes. When I got back, everybody made jokes about me wearing Af1's with pink on them. About a year later, "Linen/Atmosphere" were one of the most sought after AF1's at the time. And, yup, I had 9 fresh pair left!
If You Had To Pick 3 Favorites From Your Collection, What Would They Be?:
I don't collect... But my faves : White/White AF1, 1 of 1 Jackie Robinson AF1, 1 of 1 "All Stars" AF1.
How Did You Start Collecting Whatever Style You Collect?:
I don't collect! Hahaha!! As soon as AF1s were released, they were the object of my obsession. 1982-83.
What's The Most You've Ever Paid For A Single Pair? What Was It?:
$1,200 for Undefeated Jordan IV, $1,200 for Eminem Jordan IV. Wore both once, and a lunatic bought them both from me for an insane amount.
What Would You Say To Someone That Says Collecting Sneakers Is A Waste Of Time?:
Hmm.. I think I would say: "you are absolutely right!" Hahaha!!
Do You Think Your Collection Will Ever Be Complete?:
I don't collect!! So I'm good..
Will Sneaker Collecting Ever Die?:
For the guys who collect, I doubt it will die. There will always be new shoes. (And Retros!) Bottom line: if you like them, get them, wear them, move on. It's not that serious! It's just leather & rubber!
