Earlier this week, we reported that Nike would be honoring officers with its second annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. After the Internet got a whiff of the news, there were people who weren't too pleased with the Swoosh and threatened to boycott the brand, which started the hashtag #BoycottNike.
Since the news broke on Tuesday, a number of people have been voicing their opinions on Twitter, berating Nike for giving back to the police community. Here's how some people reacted.
UPDATE (3:15 p.m.):
Nike has issued an official statement regarding the social media backlash on its Law Enforcement Appreciation Day discount:
"Nike has held discount days in its stores for first responders, including law enforcement and the military, since 9/11. Nike has no intention to offend anyone, nor to imply that we are insensitive to the serious and important issues between law enforcement and black communities in America. We care about and support efforts to continue discussions to create positive change and bring equality for everyone in our society."
