To help usher in the era of LeBron James in Los Angeles, it looks like the Lakers are taking inspiration from the past. New images have popped up on Twitter that hint that Hollywood's team might be going back to the "Showtime" era jersey font for the upcoming season.

While an official announcement on Nike's uniforms for the upcoming season is expected soon, popular sporting goods retail chain Modell's might have spoiled the surprise. Jerseys and T-shirts were spotted on the racks of the store's Times Square location earlier this week sporting the drop shadowed numbering that hasn't donned the purple and gold uniforms since 1999.

Do you notice a difference between the Lakers jersey shirts from last season and the ones that were just released today? What do you think?

Modell's has reportedly since been contacted by the NBA to remove them from the sales floor, but not before the images started floating around on social media. Worth noting, these might just be an alternate jersey for select games considering the league has already sold King James jerseys with the current font as well.

Source: The NBA contacted the Modell's at Times Square, asking them to remove these uniforms from the floor. But someone captured a photo, showing the Lakers will include drop shadow on their numbers for the first time since 1999.

With some Lakers faithful already shunning LeBron before he even plays a game, is ushering in his tenure with jerseys synonymous with legends like Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar a good or bad move?

UPDATE (07/31): The Los Angeles Lakers have officially unveiled their new Icon jerseys inspired by the 1980s 'Showtime' era that the team will wear for the upcoming 2018-2019 regular season. LeBron James' Showtime jersey is available for pre-order now at for $110 and will also be making its way to other select Nike retailers in the near future. Orders are scheduled to ship on Aug. 1.
