In 1987, Nike removed the veil on their revolutionary Max Air cushioning with the release of the Nike Air Max 1. Designed by a young and rising Tinker Hatfield, the shoe revolutionized both the brand and the industry, making visible technology a signifier of clout and athletic ability when it came to performance footwear.

In the decades that followed, Nike’s Air Max cushioning and running line would gain fanfare amongst avid runners while also roping in casual wearers and die-hard collectors. In 2014, Nike set out to celebrate the tech that changed everything by designating March 26th as Air Max Day, commemorating the date the Air Max 1 first hit retail.

Since then, the date—and eventually the month—has turned into more footwear fanfare as Nike has re-released archival Air Max classics every spring, ranging from coveted collabs to landmark OGs. In accordance with this year’s month long Air Max Day celebration that returns CLOT’s “Kiss of Death” Air Max 1 and the Dave’s Quality Meat “Bacon” Air Max 90, among others, we call out the best retro runners inspired by the annual Air Max event that are available on GOAT right now.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the pivotal Nike Air Max 1, the brand had to go big. Real big. Pulling from heavy hitter collaborations crafted by the likes of Patta, Kid Robot, Parra and Atmos, the final product proved a who’s who collage of colorways that made the Air Max 1 a transcendent staple in sneaker culture. Appropriately titled the “Master” makeup, this shoe revised the blueprint, crate digging for classics to compile one greatest hits compilation.
