Athletes are increasingly using their sneakers to broadcast messages beyond brand ones, customizing their pairs in reference to national tragedies and personal moments. First overall pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft Breanna Stewart used the above Nike KD 8 to reference the recent Orlando shooting at gay nightclub Pulse.

Stewart wrote "Orlando United" and "#Enough" on the toes and appears to have written the names of the victims along the midsoles.

On her Instagram, the Seattle Storm player expressed an urge to find a solution to this kind of violence.

"We are all a part of something bigger," Stewart wrote in her caption accompanying the shoes on Instagram. "It's important to remember the names of the people who lost their lives as we all try to search for answers and solutions."
