With 2015 on the horizon, another company is hoping to beat Nike to the punch on auto-lacing.

Funded through Kickstarter, Powerlace is described as the ‘most effective means of tying shoelaces the hands-free way.’ The system’s mechanism is activated by a small lever at the lower rear of the shoe that unlocks when the foot is inserted. To remove the shoe, the wearer pulls the lever or steps on the back.

The Powerlace team has put the mechanism through rigorous testing and promises to deliver up to 200,000 lacing cycles. No batteries, motors, springs or gears aid the mechanism.

As of today, the Powerlace Kickstarter has raised about $24,000 of a $650,000 CAD goal with 57 days left. A pair of shoes will run you $195.

We've seen auto-lacing Kickstarters miss the mark in the past — will this one be any different? Does anybody want this to happen if it isn't the Back to the Future-inspired Nike MAG?
