11 Things You Need to Know About the Nike Kyrie 6

As Kyrie Irving begins the latest phase of his career as a member of Brooklyn Nets, he transitions into his next signature sneaker, the Nike Kyrie 6, which is officially being unveiled today.

One of Nike Basketball's most popular signature lines continues with a model that is obviously more lifestyle-oriented, reflective of Irving's multifaceted personality and understanding that who he is cannot be confined to what happens on the court. The result is a sneaker that bounces between old and new, stylish and functional, all in the name of performance—no matter where the wearer is.

To get you ready for the Kyrie 6 launch, we broke down what you need to know about the shoe into 11 items. Read on to find out more about the next generation of Nike Kyrie.

The Nike Kyrie 6 was designed by Benjamin Nethongkome, who has now designed the last 3 Kyrie signature models.

"We've built a lot of trust over the last three shoes," says Nethongkome. "I know what Kyrie wants from an overall feel. There is a certain formula: An extra-padded tongue, almost SB style, and a cushy collar, combined with support in the midfoot."

The general theme that plays out with the Kyrie 6, in terms of both design and technology, is fusing old and new concepts. So while this shoe will draw comparisons to one model in particular, elements such as leather construction and a the cross-strap are also a nod to golden era hoop shoes from the 90s, while the intricate design cues are more reflective of today's footwear. This acts as a parallel to Irving himself—an electric young talent with an old, wise soul.

The Kyrie 6 retains the Kyrie 5's articulated Air Zoom Turbo unit in the forefoot for multi-direction responsiveness, along with a plush foam, or optimum cushion and a smooth underfoot feel at the heel.

One of the highly touted elements of the Kyrie 6 is the Traction 360 grip, which keeps Irving play quicker and feel more connected toe the court. Micro textures on the top of the forefoot extend that connection during extreme banking.

While the cross-strap isn't new to Irving's signature line, this is the first time it's appeared in a more traditional form. The strap not only supports dynamic cutting and enhances arch support, but evokes a little 90s aesthetic.

To help the wearer achieve top speeds, the last of the shoe has been dropped 5mm closer to the court.

"The biggest accomplishment that we’ve had in my shoe line is just evolving with the technology at Nike, and it really being specifically made for me," says Irving.

Irving's signature sneakers have generally been an off-court option to date, but this time, he and Nethongkome made it a point to design a model with off-court appeal by using materials such as premium leather and ballistic mesh.

According to Nike, the sharply molded heel counter references models worn by Irving during his pre-signature days and some of his favorite lifestyle silhouettes.

It's well known that Irving is a spiritual man, and his signature sneakers will continue to reflect that. The Kyrie 6 features recurring motifs such as the healer's hand and all-seeing eye, as well as personal elements such as his number 11 and mantra "hungry and humble."

"The Zoom Airbag, 360 traction and the strap — the technology defines the functionality of the shoe," says Irving. "But it's evolved into a beautiful design that incorporates different inspirations from past Nike shoes."

The primary past Nike shoe the Kyrie 6 is drawing comparisons to won't be mentioned by name, but the Air Yeezy 2 design language is clearly there. It would seem that they're thinking long-term, hoping to create a shoe that sets new trends, honors the past and has appeal similar to Jordan retros down the line.

"What’s history without utilizing it and implementing it into your own style and your own swag?" asks Irving.
