Tonight, the best basketball players in the world collectively took the court in Salt Lake City for the 2023 NBA All-Star Game.
This year marked the beginning of a new way of selecting teams—a live pregame draft by captains LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo. James selected a team lead by Joel Embiid, Kyrie Irving, Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, and Jaylen Brown, while Antetokounmpo selected Jayson Tatum, Damian Lillard, Ja Morant, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander among others. Hardly a defensive standoff, the game could best be described as a showcase of elite offense, specifically from Jayson Tatum, who scored a game-record 55 points to help Team Giannis beat Team LeBron 184-175. It was Antetokounmpo’s first win as captain and James’ first loss.
Tatum’s performance was also special because it marked the on-court debut of his first signature shoe, the Jordan Tatum 1, which was only introduced earlier in the day. He played in the “Pink Lemonade” and “Zoo” colorways to fuel his MVP performance.
