What It's Like to Be a Jordan Brand Athlete

Track and Field athlete Kori Carter gives us a look into what it's like to be sponsored by Jordan Brand.

24-year-old Kori Carter may have not made the final cut for the 2016 Olympics in Track and Field, but she’s becoming a known name in the sneaker scene. Thanks to her sponsorship from Jordan Brand, Carter, who was a nine-time All-American at Stanford University, has received exclusive footwear.

People started to take notice when Carter was seen wearing Jordan Brand track spikes, but she’s also been gifted exclusive pairs of Air Jordans, too. Her athletic journey has also led her to make friendships with other notable sneaker connoisseurs, such as four-time gold medal-winning Olympian Allyson Felix.

Although her fourth-place finish in the U.S. Olympic Trials for the 400M hurdles is a setback for Carter, she’s still a name to pay attention to in the future, especially if she continues to grow her connection with Jordan Brand.

We recently had the chance to catch up with her and learn about where her passion for footwear came from and what it’s like to be under Michael Jordan’s brand.

When did you first get into sneakers?
I was a tomboy growing up and sneakers have always been a staple in my wardrobe. In high school, I started to view sneakers more in a fashion sense and have begun collecting [ever since]. My teammate, Allyson Felix, loves sneakers as well and has shown me the ropes and has taught me about sneaker culture. I call her my “Sneaker Sensei.”

How did Jordan Brand approach you to be part of their team?
Jordan Brand is definitely evolving into way more than a basketball brand. The expansion of their training line shows that any athlete can be “like Mike,” regardless of what sport they play. Hurdlers are all about flight, too, just at a different trajectory than ball players, so I think it was a perfect fit.

Have you ever met Michael Jordan? What was the first time like?
The first time I met Michael Jordan, I was in awe – there is an aura about him. I was pretty nervous to meet him, this legend in the world of sports, but I told myself to play it cool. I ended up giving him a huge hug when he approached me. Talking to him was amazing. I was hanging on to his every word.

How many sneakers a month does Jordan send you?
Jordan Brand really takes care of their athletes. My shoe game is always on point and I appreciate every gift.

Have they given you any exclusive sneakers?
One of the great things about being Jordan’s smallest athlete and having a size 5.5y foot is that I’m the only one who gets the GS drops. Recently I was given my first pair of one-of-one Custom XIs in my favorite color, neon green. Check them out on my Instagram, @thekorimonster.

Do you think wearing the Jumpman gives you an edge on the track?
Michael Jordan inspires greatness, and I carry that on track with me. It is definitely an honor to represent Jordan Brand when you see the caliber of athletes that gets to rock the Jumpman. I want to live up to that standard.
