Back in 2011, Nike decided to bring back the Air Mag as part of a special auction to help raise money for The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Since we saw Marty McFly with the auto-lacing Air Mag's in Back to the Future Part II, the fascination with self-lacing sneakers has been a dream for everyone, and Nike even went on to confirm they release their own pair in 2015. Well now, Nike may have some competition in the auto-lacing market as a Canadian startup has took to Kickstarter to try and beat the Swoosh to the punch with their Powerlace P-One shoes.

Despite the Powerlace name, the P-One shoes feature no electrical system, but relies on you body weight to tighten the laces. Once you step into the shoe, your heel presses a hidden disc that works with a wired lacing system to automatically tighten the shoes. To take them off, a simple lever in the back allows you to release pressure, and adjust the fit to your personal needs.

Sure, these don't have all the bells and whistles that we expect from Nike, and have the look of a generic hiking shoe, so the chances of Powerlace making an impact in the style department may be a stretch. Where Powerlace can make a splash is through the technology, which appears to work rather simply and seamlessly. If your interested, hit up the Powerlace Kickstarter page, where you can donate and get you pair for $175. They got some work to do, as Powerlace is looking for $650,000 to become the "world's first" auto-lacing shoe on the market.
