The first interview of the night came after The Father took home the award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Screenwriter Christopher Hampton was in the press room in LA, while director Florian Zeller called in from Paris. Doing things virtually already adds a level of awkwardness to these press junkets, and having the two interviewees attend from different countries only made it worse. It was tricky at first as people waited to be unmuted while the talent waited patiently. Due to sound and muting issues, “Sorry. Can you hear me?” was repeated throughout the night. Zeller addressed the weirdness of the moment and said: “It’s unlike any other kind of Oscar ceremony I would imagine it has ever been. It is strange but great.” I totally agree.
