Ed Sheeran has landed a new acting gig.

The British singer-songwriter has been cast in Sumotherhood, an action-comedy directed by Adam Deacon, adding to his acting portfolio which already includes the hit TV series Game Of Thrones and Hollywood blockbusters Yesterday and Red Notice.

The movie is just about to start production in East London and alongside Ed Sheeran, the likes of Danny Sapani (Black Panther, Penny Dreadful), Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous), Peter Serafinowicz (The TickSpy), Leomie Anderson (Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show), London Hughes (London Hughes: To Catch A D*Ck) and Jaime Winstone (Kidulthood) will also be featuring.

Alongside the on-screen talent, Sumotherhood will also be using the services of Simon Stolland (Blue Story) as a cinematographer. While Sheeran is yet to comment on his new role, Deacon has said that he is “so excited” that this incredible cast is joining in on his project and that he “can’t wait to bring these wacky and crazy characters to life.” The new film, he added, will celebrate the “variety of life in East London in 2022” and be “darkly authentic, as well as embracing the vibrant and diverse lifestyle of living in an East London council estate.”

Written by Deacon, Jazzie Zonzolo and Michael Vu, Sumotherhood marks actor/writer/director Deacon’s comeback into filmmaking after several years away from the industry and over a decade since his 2011 directorial debut, Anuvahood. Having made his mark on the film industry during his performance in the 2006 drama Kidulthood, he then went on to win the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2012.

Sumotherhood will be shot in East London throughout February and March. An official release date has yet to be announced.
