Disney CEO Bob Chapek announced in an earnings call Wednesday that the Disney+ limited series Obi-Wan Kenobi will debut on May 25.

Disney+ confirmed the date soon after, along with a new poster showing Ewan McGregor, who is reprising his role as the younger Obi-Wan.

According to Disney, the series will pick up “ten years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.” Hayden Christensen is also returning to play Anakin Skywalker as he becomes Darth Vader in 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. The cast includes Moses Ingram (The Queen’s Gambit), Joel Edgerton (Loving), Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), and Benny Safdie (Good Times).

It has been a long road to a release date for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series since McGregor confirmed its arrival at the D23 Expo in 2019. Five months after his announcement, Varietyreported Lucasfilm was looking for new writers to conduct a major overhaul on the scripts, which Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously said were already written. The report came after rumors began to circulate about the series getting scrapped altogether.

In an Oct. 2020 appearance on The Graham Norton Show, McGregor revealed that filming for Obi-Wan Kenobi would begin in March 2021 following a production delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. McGregor announced in September that filming had just wrapped.

News of Obi-Wan Kenobi ’s release date arrived on the heels of The Book of Boba Fett’s season 1 finale.
