The Sandman is back. In celebration of the comic's 30th anniversary, DC and creator Neil Gaiman (American Gods, Coraline) are putting the world of the famed '80s series into plastic sleeves again.
The new run will start off with a one-off special, The Sandman Universe #1, which will "introduce spaces beyond The Dreaming" as well as new locations like the House of Whispers and its "mysterious proprietor," explained Gaiman, who wrote the original series under DC's Vertigo imprint.
As for the four new comics, Gaiman is enlisting the "most incredible collaborators [he] could ask for." This includes Si Spurrier for The Dreaming, Nalo Hopkinson for House of Whispers, Kat Howard for Books of Magic, and Dan Watters for Lucifer, the same character who's featured in the Fox series of the same name, midway through its third season. (The American Gods adaptation on Starz has a second season in production now.)
"Watching Dream's popularity flourish over the course of the series was exhilarating and humbling. But I always knew that the story would eventually end. DC was gracious enough to allow me to resolve the story on my terms. And I and Morpheus laid to rest in 1996," said Gaiman in a promotional clip for the new series, above. "But still, there were corners of the Sandman world waiting to be explored and we're gonna explore them."
Although the film adaption of The Sandman with Joseph Gordon-Levitt fell through, we'll definitely take this in the meantime.
The new run, which also coincides with Vertigo's 25th anniversary, is slated to kick off on August 8.
