Word first started coming in from D23 attendees that new Rise of Skywalker footage had been unveiled during the Disney gathering in which Rey (Daisy Ridley) was indeed seen rocking a Sith-esque hood and red lightsaber. That lightsaber, as Colliderpointed out over the weekend, extends into a double lightsaber not unlike the one used by prequels character Darth Maul.

The Rise of Skywalker, featuring the return of Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams, hits theaters with some answers Dec. 20.

Speaking during D23 festivities on the film, which stands as the final entry in the Skywalker Saga, Abrams called the late Carrie Fisher its "heart." Per Abrams, he and the team realized they "could not possibly" tell this story without Leia.

"We realized that we had footage from Episode VII, and we could use it in a new way," he said.

The D23 event also saw the premiere of a new trailer for The Mandalorian, a Star Wars universe-expanding series set to premiere on the new Disney+ streaming service in November.
