Initial reports of an active shooter started showing up on Twitter roughly an hour before the shooter was reported to be detained in some way, with several witnesses describing the chaos. Local authorities are urging residents to stay away from campus, as ATF canine teams search for explosives and ammunition. Students are currently being "bused off campus," with emergency medical crews still assisting the wounded on campus. FBI officials are currently en route to the scene.

Though the shooter has been identified by local authorities as a male in his late 20s, his name has not yet been released to the press. Online reports quoted by the New York Daily News suggest that the shooter may have issued some sort of warning via a post on 4chan on Wednesday, including a reference to Isla Vista shooter Elliot Rodger. Eyewitness accounts quoted by NRToday reveal that the shooter asked potential victims to "stand up and state their religion" before he started firing away.
