Basically Everyone Hated This 'Saturday Night Live' Irish Airline Sketch

'SNL' missed the mark on an otherwise OK-ish episode.

As is tradition at this point, Saturday Night Live tumbled into a spectacularly lackluster sketch this weekend. The Cecily Strong and Saoirse Ronan-starring "Aer Lingus," however, was not only spectacularly lackluster. It was also a bit offensive to a number of SNL viewers.

Just tried watching Saturday Night Live - unwatchable! Totally biased, not funny and the Ronan impersonation just can't get any worse. Sad

Setting aside the annoyingly Trump-esque tone of @AerLingus' response, the backlash to the unfunny sketch was palpable. "SNL, i am BEGGING you: make fun of Chinese people as often as you make fun of the Irish," one YouTube commenter said. "Thanks in advance [sic]." Another kept waiting for the punch line, only to learn that it was never going to come. "What was this supposed to even be about?" the commenter asked.

Disapproval of the sketch, either for its general unfunniness or its use of stereotypes, also trickled over to Twitter.

The @AerLingus sketch. WOW. Casting Ireland as a backward country again, is that the best you can do? We were the first country in the world to vote in a referendum to allow same-sex marriage. Our leader is openly gay. You elected a pussy grabber and might elect a pedophile. End

Sorry. I know I shouldn't, but I have to tweet this. Even by the woeful standards of #SNL, this is dreadful. No British station would get away with this depiction of the Irish as potato-scoffing eejits. The dire accents? The Arran jumpers? Unbelievable.

Sheesh, someone just sent me that snl aerlingus sketchy, bit of a swing and a miss, we get it, Irish people like dogs and poetry and potatoes and our accents are funny. Classic

To say I'm desperately disappointed in Saoirse Ronan's impersonation of @AerLingus air hostess on Saturday Night Live is an understatement.

Can we all be clear about something because twitter seems to be getting it’s knickers in a twist again...that #SNL sketch last night with Saoirse Ronan on an @AerLingus flight was NOT insulting.

It was just utterly shit.

Apparently, we were written into an #SNL sketch last night! 😏 So... what did you think?

The rest of this weekend's SNL was noticeably better. "Welcome to Hell" invited sexual harassers to enjoy their new purgatory, the cold open gave Alec Baldwin's Trump the chance to chat with spirit versions of Billy Bush and Vladimir Putin, and an animated Kendrick Lamar popped in during U2's performance.
